HOLIDAYS.

Sir,— Some time ago the Napier school • committee was taken to task for granting a holiday on the last meeting bat one of the Napier Park Racing Club, and several letters appeared in yobr journal commenting on the fact. The lesson then taught does not appear to Jiave had much' effect, • for to-day we 'find the committee has. . ; granted a. holiday to the children — the' occasion being Renata's funeral. What the school children have -to do with Renata's funeral is beyond me. It may have been that the committee took pity on the overworked (?) teachers, and' granted the holiday in order to allow them a clay's onting. If this surmise is . correct I mnst enter a strong protest '.; i against a repetition of such an uncalled for act of generosity. The teachers of our : public schools have about the easiest work of any public servants — commencing . - their duties at 9.30 a.m. and leaving at' 3.30 — this witli an hour for lunch gives fivo hours' work in the day -with a fall holiday on Saturday, 25 hours per week. If this can ■be called overwork -will yoii ' tell me, Mr Editor, what might reasonably be called easy work !, If the holiday' . , was granted by the committee, for the . purpose of allowing the children to attend Kenata's funeral, then the least that can be said of it is that it was oxtremely foolish.— l am, &c, Pabent. Napier, April 20. ' ■ \
