Mackonochie, against whom in 1883 sentence of deprivation was pronounced for illegally practising Romish ceremonies whilst incumbent of St. Albans. Received December 20, 10.55 p.m.) December 19. The Marquis of Salisbury, speaking at Derby, said he did not consider the diplomatic news pointed to an immediate European war, although he believed hostilities would commence without any warning. For that reason it was necessary that England should make all needful preparations. His Lordship vigorously condemned the Protection movement! which he declared could only result in civil war. Referring to the coming session of Parliament, Lord Salisbury said that the business to be transacted would be essentially British.and it was not the intention of Her Majesty's Government to devote any considerable time to Irish questionß. Received December 21, 1.55 a.m.) December 20. _ Mr John Hooper, M.P. for the southeast county of Cork, and Alderman of Cork City, who was recently arrested for publishing in the Cork Herald reports of meetings of a suppressed branch of the National League, was brought befere the Court yesterday, and sentenced to one month's imprisonment. Colian and Harkins, the suspected dynamite plotters, were charged on remand at the Bow-street police-court yesterday, with having dynamite in their
possession and plotting explosions. The evidence for the prosecution was continued, and on its conclusion both the accused were committed for trial. The tone of the wool market continues firm. The arrivals to date for the next series of colonial wool - sales number 50,000 bales. The New Zealand 4 per cent, inscribed stock has further advanced 10s, and is now quoted at 98.
