CANTERBURY V. HAWKE'S BAY.

0 1.TR REPRESENT. VTI VES. As was of Bourse to be expected, the team selected by Messrs Logan, (libbons, and Moiispn to represent Hawke's Bay in the match against Canterbury on Saturday next has come in for the usual amount of criticism, but they may console themselves with the fact that no selection poiiimittcc can satjsfy everyone. The team, as picked, is certain to niVov n most stubborn defence to our visitors, and it includes some forwards who may s>cnre, but the addition of such a man as the Te Ante captain, Prentice, to the backs, would certainly improve our chances of success. Prentice lias probably been omitted owing to bis failure to attend the trial matches, but apart from this fuct he is known to be a sturdy and fairly heavy young player, who work* with ilie coolness of a veteran, tackles, drops, and punts splendidly, and when playing at three ijuarters is an almost ceitain scorer if "fed." He is a fast and very dodgy runner, and one of the most dillicull players in the province to tackle. Another mistake, has been made in the omission of .1. Fleming from full-back. Firming has recently regained his form, and is playing very well. He is not a "speiler,'" bub though lacking in speed is a very fine kick and a sure tackier. He can also stop rushes without a resort to the dangerous expedient of kicking at a rolling );all. Another man who is worthy of a place in the team is Whetu, the Te Ante wing player, a good dribbler, fast follower up, and line tackier : and a forward deserving of consideration is Cuthhert, of the County, who has shown very conspicuously in recent matches, displaying speed in following, combined with very elieetive dribbling. The order of the emergencies slionlil &l.»o bo revelled. The following remarks on the ieani will probably be of interest to players :- - KW.I.-liACK. I!. "look out for Taiaroa" to raise the New South "Wales players to desperation. If he /ins lost the dash, however, he has ucijnireil in its stead a wonderfully easy and elli'dive style of picking up and gliding in which makes him very dangerous to his opponents.

(iibhonsi (Napier).— One of the tiiostunsellisli half-backs playing. He "feeds" his three-quarters with great judgment and dexterity, and punts and dribbles well. Light, but a very hard worker. Hi* clever and well-timed passing has won many games fur his club. A good place kick. KOI! WAI! I IS. .lamieson (Napier).- A Scotch international representative and a model forward. Dribbles and follows up most persistently, and often scores a lino tackier.

Stewart (County).— One of tiie best forwards in the team. Dribbles splendidly and brings the ball through the scrum in a surprising manner. A likely scorer, and very eliective on the line out. Has been playing very woll this season. Saundeis (County). — A good dribbler, who also has a knack of breaking through. Follows up well. l'\ Kennedy (Napier). — (lood dribbler and fast follower.
