SIR GEORGE GREY AT AUCKLAND.

.auuKiiAHD, *naay. Sir George Grey addressed the A.uck- , land City East electors' to-night in the City Hall. Mr George Fraser, president of the Auckland Industrial Association, " . presided. There was a crowded attendance, and the platform was filled by a number of leading citizens, including several members of the Legislature and of local bodies. - Sir George Grey, on- making his appearance, was received with enthusiastic applause, the audience rising en masse. The cheating was renewed when he commenced his address. A portion of his speech traversed the ground already dealt with, In his previous addresses. He denounced the Midland railway land concession, advocated a reduction of the v.'iiraber of members of the Assembly, a . induction of Ministers to four, simplified- ' . tion of the departments, reduction of the Civil Service,. reduction of the education ;, vote without diminishing the efficiency of the system, reduction of expenditure ot the colony, reduction of taxation (in consequence of such diminished expenditure), anil the settlement of the waste lands of the colony on the lines of his Land Bill rather than by the present village settlement system under the present regulations, which he warmly denounced. He was in favor of fair and proper Protection being given to local industries, but if a system of unqualified Protection was in- . troduced which wo»ld build up large fortunes for the manufacturers he would insist on the manufacturing poor sharing in the wealth which their labor created. The following resolution was carried by acclamation : — "That the Auckland East electors beg to thank Sir George Grey for his able address just delivered ; that they desire also to record their unabated contidsnce in him as their member, and sincerely trust that he may long continue to represent them in the House of Repre- _• -sentatives."
