BUYING VOTES.
An amusing illustration of the parochial tendency of the popular mind generally (says tho Dunedin Star) was furnighed at Mr Barren's pre-sessional moetiug. After the delivery of a skilful and elaborate address upon important questions of policy some one gravely propounded a query about a " retaining wall " at St. Clair. This incident, however, had the effect of eliciting from Mr Barron a most pronounced accusation of tie Government. Evidently lie was iudigna'it at such a small question being put, but, having been put, he euid that had he bettu willing to soil his volo to tho Groverument, the seawall at St. Clair, aud other matters that he had adrocated, would have been attended to, and expresst'd his opinion that " I here never had been a Govern, ment that sold favora 'nore uhblnshingly than the present Government ; that there never had been one that trafficked in votes more ; and ha hoped they would never have another that would do the same."
