On the fourth page will be found an article entitled " Italian Workmen." The Foresters in the Taradale district will celebrate the anniversary of Court Kedcliflb tin Thursday, May 12th, by a fancy dress ball in the Oddfellows' Hall, Taradale. We are requested to state that on Monday Mons, Bourgeois will go roxvnA the town on a collecting tour, for gifts for the bazaar to be held at Hastings by Miss Bogle's pnpils in aid of Dr. Barnardo's home for destitute children. The utility of the sick aiid accident fund ,of, the, Napier Volunteer Fire Brigade is well shown in the case of Foreman Kobson, who recently received snch severe injuries in connection with the fire at Mrllobjohn's residence, the. brigade having been able to vote him £2 a week dining the time lie is incapacitated. Messrs H. J. and T. Starkey, old and favorably known residents of Napier, have started business as master cabinetmakers in Shakespeare-road. In connection with that part of their business they will supply turning and other f'eqniremonts to the ttafle.Jlaving steam-power and improved facilities already available. ' In connection with the recent " en-

campment cooking," does it not seem I rather absurd that Volunteers are not taught to construct camp kitchens and to ' cook their own meals? In time of war, should such a time unfo/tunately come, it cannot be expected thrt each company will haye /a restaurant corps forming part of its equipment. Our Waipawa, correspondent writes as follows under yesterday's date:—" At the Waipawa Police Court' this morning, before Messrs A. St. C. Inglis and S. Johnson, J.P.s, .William Hoojer was charged with stealing two bottles. of brandy, value 10s, from, the Empire Hotel. The charge was. proved by Frank Turner, the waiter at the hotel, who, on entering the bar, found the prisoner in the act of stealing the bottles of liquor. Prisoner was sentenced to two months' hard labor in the Napier gaol." The Napier Rowing Club will hold the final races of the season on Saturday in the inner harbor. Before the races commence the ceremony of christening the new four-oared outriggers recently imported from Melbourne will take place, the naming being timed for 2.45 p.m. The first race (two miles) will be between Begg and Rdehfort, and will be rowed in the new boats. Sfcyehe will then row a bye, after' which Woledge and Lyndon will compete in in rigged boats over a mile course. Following this will be the Jinal heat between Styche and the winner of the first out-rigger event.' Crews are requested to be at the rendezvous at 2.30 so that.no delay may occur in carrying out the programme. A largo and well-appointed circus will open in .dive-square on Monday next, and it is announced that an exceptionally good programme will be presented, including some startling novelties. One of these will be an act in which a trained Bronco horse, "T,oney," will mount a four-wheeled trolly and drive two similar horses harnessed to the vehicle. There will also be good gymnastic and riding feats by lady and gentlemen performers. This circus lias been working its way up from South overland, and wherever it has shown on . the way tho Press (including the Wellington papers) have given the most flattering notices. Those who can enjoy a good circus, which means everybody over 5 and under 100 years of age, can look forward to a treat. Wo understand that Major Garner intends to take legal proceedings in connection with the statement recently . telegraphed by the Press Association that he had been dismissed from the military command of this district for, amongst other tilings, assaulting a Volunteer in uniform. It was represented that the Defence Minister had taken this step " after, inquiry." We understand that no inquiry whatever was held — that the lirsfc intimation Major Garner received of the affair was through the paragraph in question — and that he bad absolutely no opportunity of saying anything in selfdefence. This is a -most extraordinary state of affairs, seeing that the Volunteer regulations distinctly provide for inquiries in all such cases. The Defence Minister, however,- seems as much above regulations as deficient in a sense of fair play. Mr Dick has been retained by Major Garner in connection with the proceedings contemplated by him. The quarterly inspection of the Napier Volunteer Fire Brigade was held Jast evening.'. There was a good muster. The steamer was taken to the Olivesquare well, where a good practice was held, the engine working well. At the after meeting, Superintendent Waterworth in the chair, it was decided to pay the sum of £2 per week to Foreman liobson; who recently met with a very severe accident while in discharge of his duty. It was stated that the brigade had received a donation of £6 from Mr J. H. Coleman, and £3 3s from Mr J. Heron, which sums would about cover the necessary disbursements up to the present time in connection with Foreman llobson's accident. The following new members were elected: — Messrs Marers, C. Steeyeus, and A. Levy; Messrs F. W, Collins, J, Langley, J. Morrison, and R. Miller being also nominated for membership.' Brauchman Holland was appointed foreman of- the steamer in place of Foreman Harding, appointed Jiret engineer, ,' ' „ At the settling over the Town and Suburban race meeting the following amounts were paid over in stakes : — C. Arrow £57, J. Rollo £19, E. Broughton £19, O. Ever-

sou £10, H. Limmer£l9, J. BriggsfS 11s, J. Karauria £11 5s, W. Broughton £4 155, B. Cane M 15s, W. Conway £1. The stewards decided that with a view to stop so many protests it would be expedient to do away with the training track, aud to lay it down in grass, making the course follow the line of' the wire fence. It was also decided to erect a small stand for tho accommodation. of the public. Tho next meeting will be held on the 15th of June, when the following stakes will be run for :— Handicap Hurdles of 30 soys, Maiden Flat, Race of 20 soys, Handicap Pony Raco of 10 soys, Taradale Handicap of 40 soys, Selling Race of 20 soys, and Flying Handicap of 20 soys ; nominations May I'tth, weights May 2Sth, acceptances June 11th.

The entertainment at the Gaiety Theatre, last evening in aid of the new church being erected nt Moanoo was very largely attended, the dress circle being crowded. Everything passed oil' in the most successful manner possible, and the promoters are to be congratulated upon a result which will considerably augment the church building fund. The.y also deserve the highest praise for the elaborate and complete manner in which the various tableaux were- designed and presented. The dresses were not only rich and ornamental, but were thoroughly .appropriate. A hypercritical person might object that gold-rimmed spectacles did not form part of Bluebeard's ordinary equipment when engaged in; the .charming occupation of killing too Anrioua wives, but even in that case the objector would, bo hard pushed if required to prove that " giglamps" could lie rightly considered as articles of attire. It is therefore quite safe to pin one's faith to the conviction .that the dresses

were in perfect keening with the scenes presented) It may lie fairly said that a Napier audience never before saw such a complete series of spectacular groupings, and the ladies anil gentlemen who took

larfc in them, and Miss Newby and Mrs

Heath, under whose direction the tableaux were produced, may without egotism claim to have scored a most complete success. The following were the tableaux phisonlod:—" Titaniii," 30 children, throe scenes -, " Old Woman in Siioe, with nursery," about 40 children, three scenes ; "Walls have Ears," tiireGScnncs; "liip Van Winkle," ten scenes ; "l'Viith, Hope, and Charity," one scene; "Mary, Queen of Scots," three scenes ; " Queen of Hearts," live scenes ; and " lUuelieard,"

live scenes. Vocal and instrumental selections were contributed during tho evening by the following ladies and gentlemen:— MiHsWilliains.MissSpooner, Miss Kennedy, Miss M. Donnelly, Miss Barry, Mrs Owen, and Messrs Spackinan, Aplin, Kennedy, Kc^vbould, Mountfort, and Simpson. Mr Hpitgson deserves . great praise for his successful share in the entertainment. Ho described the tableaux

pithily and woll, ivhd in 'connection with one of them ably rcciteij passages from "Mary, Queen of Scots!" At the conclusion' of thcS proceeding Urn lluv. V. L. Tuko ascended tho stage, and in a few happily-expressed words, on behalf of his parishioners thanked all who had taken

iaii in the enlcrtainmoiifc, and those who
