HOW TO MAKE UP "ASSETS."
: A Sydney paper of recent date has the ' following amusing paragraph illustrating tho ingenious manner in which bankrupts ' are wont to mako up a good-looking J schedule of assets : — " Whon a man be--1 comes insolvent, no wonder that he 5 makes the best case he can in tho way of ' cheering his creditors in .their affliction, ' by putting down to his ored it every avail- * able item present aud prospective, which 1 may be realised for thoir benefit. A 1 gentleman who has come to finauciul grief out Dubbo way has evidently exer--0 cised hia mind very severely over the B matter of appeasing his creditors, and shown a considerable amount of in- " genuity in suggesting ways and means ' for recouping thorn for their losses. Foi ■J instance, in his schedule he pniats ou "■ that amongst his available assets are tw< 8 draught horses which he lost in 1884 '" and which lie supposes were stolen ; alsi n another horse which . has gone astray 18 and a cart, harness, and a saddle whicl r " ho, lent to a man at Bourke, but lio ha " no idea wlieao Ihey are. These item '" amounttonenrly one-half of hisliabilities 16 and as he also puts down a number c " debts due to him, which he admits to b a " hopelessly bad, he deems to conside that, instead of being insolvent, lie i considerably in credit. If tho Officii Assignoe will only jro to tho trouble c hunting for his misßing horses anddra; and succeed in finding them, ho will d a good turn to the insolvent himself, i r j] well as tho creditors. When men Joi 1 property the best plan seems seems to I •i to go insolvent, and get other peopto I find it ; at least, so tlioy seem to thiok i * Dubbo."
