HASTINGS BOROUGH COUNCIL.
[FKOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] December 17, 1886. The Council met yesterday. Present — His Worship the Mayor (chairman), and Cre. Ellis, Foreman, Luckie, M'Leod, Tong, Tanner, Williams, and Morris. CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence . was read .-— From Mr Rochfort, re Glendinning and Griffen's contract, and also furnishing statement of account due to thoni. — Moved by Cr. Tanner .and seconded by Cr. Morris, " That the question of dispute between the Borough and the contractors be referred to arbitration in the usual way, the decision oi arbitrators to be binding.'' — Motion lost. From Mr Rochfort, re re-naming Vic-toria-street. — Moved by Cr Tanner, and seconded by Ch Wiliiams, "That the street recently named 'Victoria-street' be re-named Heretaunga-road." — Carried. Moved hy Cr. Tanner, and seconded by Cr. Tong, " That the resolution carried at a former meeting naming Havelookroad 'Victoria-street' be rescinded." — Carried. From Mr Kochfort, re extension of sewage works.— Moved by Cr. Tanner, and seconded_ by Cr. Luckie, " That the recommendation of Mr llochfort be acceded to." — Carried. THE LOAN. Moved by Cr. Tannor, and seconded by Cr. Foreman, " That the loan be raised for a period of 25 years."— Carried. Moved by Cr. Foreman, and seconded by Cr. Luckio, "That the' rate of interest on loan be 5 per cent." Amendment moved by Cr. Ellis, and seconded by Cr. M'Leod, "That the rate of interest be 4J, per cent., and the loan be floated at par." — Amendment carried. Moved by Cr. Luckie, and seconded by Cr. Williams, "That the question as to the rate of interest be re-committed." — Carried. Moved by Cr. Tanner, " That the rate of interest be left blank in the debentures to be filled up by the Board's agents in England at 4J per cent, or o per cent." — Motion lapsed for want of a seconder. Moved by Cr. Williams, and seconded by. Cr. Luckie, " That the rate of interest I be fixed at 5 per cent."— Motion lost. Moved by Cr. Ellis, " That the rate of interest on the loan be fixed at 4A per cent." — Motion lapsed for want "of a seconder. Moved by Cr. Williams, and seconded by Cr. Luckie, " That the rate of interest be iixed at 5 per cent."— Carried. Moved by Cr. ■ M'Leod, • and seconded by Cr. Tanner, "That the ampnnt of the debentures be £500 each."— Carried. MISCELLANEOUS. Resolved, " That his Worship the Mayor be authorised to get the main drain cleaned out, if necessary." Moved by Cr. Luckie, and seconded by Cr. Foreman, "That the resolution appointing a public works committee be reserved."—Carried. Moved by Cr. M'Leod, and seconded by Cr. Ellis, "That the Council take into consideration / the best means of dealing with streets less than a chain wide." — Moved as an amendment by Cr. Tanner, and seconded by Cr. Luckie, " That the matter be referred to the Council's solicitor for his opinion to be laid before the next meeting of the Council."— Amendment carried. The Council then adjourned.
