In consequence of information re- i ceived the Customs officials proceeded to-day on board the barque Altair, recently from Lyttelton,' and instituted a : search for. smuggled goods. Itappears ' that several of the crew; had a dispute with the captain, arid one "of their number, formerly an A.O. man,, haying known Constable Christie down South, informed him that the captain had a quantity of sugar secreted in the lazarette which was not accounted for i on the manifest. In consequence of this the Customs authorities were communicated with, and Mr Parker, tide waiter, and several other officials proceeded on board the barque. A search in the lazarette was made, and resulted in fourteen bags of sugar being discovered which were not entered -on the manifest. Captain Munro has been served with a summons, charging him with having made a false declaration to Her Majasty's Customs by neglecting to record the fourteen bags of sugar on the inward manifest. John Douglas, a new chum, blazed away tonight in Albert-street with a five-barrelled revolver. James Eobb, a carpenter, and Win. Noakes, a bricklayer, narrowly escaped being shot. Douglas was arrested for drunkenness. Mr Courtney, in whose employ Margaret O'Brien was, offers a reward of £100-to anyone who will olear up the mystery of her poisoning. ■ . John Turn bull, a carpenter, who was injured by a plank falling from- the second storey of the New Zealand Insurance Gomp&ny's building, Victoria Arcade, now in course of oreotion, etil remains in an unconscious condition at the hospital, and a fatal termination of the accident is expected, as his skull is fractured. . Wellington, Saturday. The polioe authorities visited to-day the photographing establishments in this city, and proceedings will be instituted against the proprietors' of three shops, for employing female labor beyond .the hour, allowed by law. -'..., ' The Customs duties for this, week amount to £11,89&.
