Hawke's Bay Herald. MONDAY. JUNE 1, 1885.

On the fourth pay;e will be found a report of the rueetin£ of Ihe Hastings Town Hall Company last Friday evening and lvports of football mutches played last Saturday — one between Seamen of the Northumberland and Landlubbers and the other betwi'eu the Union second fifteen and the A'apier fifteen. There was no business at the Resident Magistrate's Court on Saturday. We are requested to draw attention to ; Mr E. Lyndon's ssle at Hawkeville on Thursday next, in the bankrupt estate of James Lyon. Major Butts will arrive bere on the 20tli instant to inspect the Volunteer corps of the district. Ho will remain about a fortnight. The sailors' outinsr afc Pctane on Saturday, as reported in another column, shows how pleasant the stay of a crew here might be raade if any organisation existed having for its object looking after " Poor Jack." Some of our prominent men might do worse than interest themselves in the founding of a Sailors' home. We hear that Miss Augusts Peerson, of Ormondvillc, who was recently charged at the Resident Magistrate's Court with lunacy, and afterwards discharged, left her home on Saturday morning, and has not since been heard of. A search party under Constable Schulz havo been scouring the bush, but with no effect. We aye indebted to the courtesy of Dr de Lisie for the following return of hospital patients during the past month: — In hospital afc date of last report, 31 males and 9 females : admitted during May, 12 males and 3 females ; total number of patients treated during the menthj 42 males and 12 females ; remaining in hospit.il at date, 19 males and 6 females. General regret is felt iv Hastings at the impending removal of Constable Lawliss, who during his stay in that town has proved himself sn efficient and a trustworthy officer, and who is, moreover, well acquainted with the district. Under these circumstances it is feared fiat any change may lead to public inconvenience, aud it is to be hoped that the authorities may see their way to retain the constable at his present post. The natives of Heretauuga had a most successful " reunion " on Friday night, about 40 couples taking part in European dances. A special feature of the entertainment was a Maori liaha, in which both sexes joined con amove. The whole affair passed off; without a hitch ; sobriety and good feeling being the order of the day. At tlie request of the natives the surplus proceeds, amounting to £1 10s, were forwarded to the Napier hospital. A correspondent at Wellington writes : — " It is happily seldom that the official world gives countenance to so-called 'spirit manifestation' and its attendant quackeries, and it is amusing to note the zest with which the Wellington detectives have been following up a ' clue ' to the recent jewel robbery in this city, hinted at by Mrs Baldwin, the clairvoyanle, during an exhibition the other night. The spectacle of these worthy vindicators oi the law's majesty stealthily betaking themselves to Mrs Baldwin's rooms at the midnight hour to draw from her mystic lips the name of the depredator (presumably imparted to her by the spirits), and then warily following up liis trail is as amusing as it is ridiculous. To what lengths of absurdity will not human credulity go I" On Saturday evening a well-attended meeting of Volunteer representatives was held in the orderly room, Emersonstreet, Sergeant Parker in the chair, to discuss the arrangements in connection with the Volunteer ball. Mr W. Tilley was appointed secretary. It was stated that Mr M. S. Bell had offered the use of the store until recently occupied by the late firm of Wardrop and Co. The committee accepted the offer with thanks, and the secretary was instructed to formally convey to Mr Bell the thanks of the committee for his kindness. It was decided to hold the ball on the 30th of June. The Garrison Band havo kindly placed their services at the disposal of the committee. After the, transaction of some routine business the committee adjourned till Thursday evening. It is anticipated that the ball will be a great success. We are authorised to state that notwithstanding the success of the " Silver King " its programme will be limited to two more performances — to-night and to-morrow evening. As the company's stay in Napier is necessarily restricted to six nights, Messrs M'Mahon and Leitch. are desirious of presenting to the public at least three of the dramatic novelties which have secured for them such an unbroken success throughout all the largo cities of New Zealand during the past three months. It is a rare achievement in theatrical management in New Zealand to crowd the theatre in one town each successive night for a month, yet this the present company have done during their season in Wellington just concluded. Night after night the respective plays produced drew crowded and fashionable audiences and " standing room only " was the standing order for the month. The next production here will be " The Librarian," a comedy which has already through the admirable performance of Mr Leitch and the company supporting him, won fame and popularity in New Zealand not less than that which it is at the present moment enjoying in England and America, where it has entered upon the the second year of its run under' the title of " The Private Secretary." It will be placed upon the stage of the Theatre Eoyal on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

of the burgesses of Napier for his re-elec-tion as a borough auditor. The polling takes place to-day at the Town Hall, Ten-nyson-street. Shareholders in the New Zealand Land Company can obtain warrants for the halfyear's interim dividend at the office of the New Zealand Insurance Company. The office of the Hawke's Bay Permanent _ Building Society will be open this evening for the receipt of monthly payments. The finder of a leather pocket-book containing money will be rewarded on returning it to the Hnr.ALV office. An advertiser wants to purchase a milk walls: Particulars are inserted respecting the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States, the head office of which in New Zealand is in Queen-street, Auckland. Mr G. H. Lysncr is the agent for Napier. The " Silver King" will be repeated at' the Theatre Royal this evening. _ Several new advertisements of vacant situations are inserted in the "wanted" column on the front page. Ne-.v Facie and fancy colored silk lace for trimming dresses, Neal and Close have a variety of widths.
