WOOLLEN FACTORY.

Sir,— " J.N.P.," a correspondent in your paper dated 16th inst., says, "In the report of the meeting of the provisional directors oE the Hawke's Bay Woollen Factory in last week's Courier I did not observe that any one alluded to the quality of the water in your district as regards its suitability for dyeing purposes." It is quite correct ; no oue did allude to the water at that meeting. Some time ago I sent a sample of the artesian water from this district to Professor Black (Dunedin University) for analyis. The following is bis report : —

I have just finished analysis of the artesian well water forwarded ry you ; the results are as under :— Total solid matter ... 9'l Organic matter ... ... ... l'2O Carbona! Eof lime „. 540 Magnesia salts ... ... ... O'ls Chloride of sodium 125 Silica o'3o Alumina and oxide of iron ... o*3o Sulphates of lime and alkalis ... o'2o Lorn 0-25 91 The figures above are given in grains per gallon. Tree ammonia, '001 of a grain par gallon ; albuminoids expressed as ammonia, *0 j3 grains per gallon ; nitrates and nitrates expressed as ammonia, 'OC6 grains per gallon. from the re ults obtained as above stated I have no hesitation in eaj ing that this is a good, clean, wholesome water for domestic use ; i<; would mate a good town supply. The water is by no means hard considering it is of artesian source. The smallness of the proportion of chlori ies and of nitrogen compounds in every form, as ammonia albuminoids and nitrates, po'nts to the virtual absence of Bewngo impuriiie?.

The above analysis ia a sufficient proof of the purity of the water for dyeing purposes, or for anything else. — I am, &c, George Ellis.
