MR KINROSS'S LIBERALITY.

Sir,— l don't know the day when I had the chance for a hearty good laugh (all to mysolf) as I had thia morning when taking up your paper. I noticed the following heading, viz. : "Mr Kinross's Liberality." Well, afc any rate, he (Mr Kinross) cannot say that his trumpeter is dead. As one that knows Mr Kinross a little bit I would ask your correspondent in what does Mr Kinross's liberality consist ? Is it because he invited a few of his own particular friends to be feasted and feted at the Union Company's expense on board their steamer, which I doubt was ever done during the first five years of their running to the port of Napier ? Your correspondent says there is not a more liberal-minded man within a radiua of fifty miles of Napier. Yes, quite so ; bat Mr " Coup de Grace" forgot to add that that was when it suited Mr Kinross's purpose and brought grist to his mill, whereby he (Mr Kinross) was to be the greatest gainer. I would ask where or in what way are the importers under any obligation to Mr Kinross? For the service done by his lighters— has he not been paid for it ? And in many cases perhaps rather stiff payment too. Had it not been for the great liberality on the part of Mr Kinross and his particular friends the breakwater would not be a matter of the present agitation, but a real fact this day, and Hawke'a Bay would now be able to hold her own against any other port in New Zealand. I, as one in the community who would like to see Hawke's Bay go ahead, most emphatically deny your correspondent's assertion re the liberality of Mr Kinross, and I say that whatever good Mr Kinross has done has been with an eye to the main chance of himself reaping the benefit. Take his actions under the present circumstances. My only wonder is that gentlemen of sound reason could listen to him without seeing through him with one eye open — that is that Mr Kinross is afraid in this harbor scheme he will lose the greater part of his cent, per cent, per cent.— l am, &c, I Know.
