Hawke's Bay Herald. SATURDAY, JANUARY 17, 1885. THE HARBOR POLL.

I The committee of the Harbor Board appointed' to confer with Mr Ormond met last night, Mr Ormond being present. A lengthy discussion ended in the adoption of a definite course which will enable the poll to be taken on Tuesday under any circumstances. Mr Weber threatens various further proceedings, but the friends of progress may laugh at such threats, and may make up their minds that THE POLL WILL BE TAKEN ON TUESDAY. The opponents of the scheme are evidently determined to try any means, fair or foul, to stop the poll being taken, but though they may go again to the Supreme Court we may rely on it that the Court will not lend itself to what is on the face of it vexatious obstruction, and an attempt to prevent the will of the majority being made known. Mr Weber and his few friends know that they are in a hopeless minority, and that the poll will, go against them, and all their efforts have been confined to legal objections purposely taken at the eleventh hour to procure delay. They believe that delay would serve their purpose. They know that large expenditure has been incurred to secure to every ratepayer an opportunity of voting on Tuesday, and they think that the people would not again make auch sacrifices as they have made and are making. But if the people are true to ; themselves, and we know they will be in "this matter, this factious and un-English-like opposition will only make them the j more determined to go to the poll, and to show that they will not allow the welfare of Hawke'e Bay to be sacrificed to the

selfish ends or fanatical prejudices of the few. The Opportunity to ahow this will be afforded on Tuesday, for the steps taken by the Harbor Board will effectually prevent any movement on jbhe of the opposition getting the delay that ia sought four.
