"*"• COUNTRY VOLUNTEERS. Mr Walker moved that the country Yoluntee'r> corps should be placed on a more satisfactory footing. Mr Ballahce said that the distinction between^ country corps and garrison oorps waß made on the recommendation of 001. 7 Scratohjey. : The reason given was that the former could not be so readily concentrated at port towns and other probable points ( of attack, and consequently they. ,were. held to be Ibbs effective. If the Country corps were subjected to the same standard as the garrison, corps he ventured to think they would be more dissatisfied; than they were at present. During the recess the Government would give the matter full consideration with the view of seeing what relief could be afforded. Buckland it waa agreed that inspectors be appointed for teßting f weights and measures, such inspectors to, visit the various centres of population and .thus remove the great coat and annoyance occasioned by the present; system.. ; MEDICAL 00E0NBB8. Mr Bradshaw moved that a medical practitioner, while in the active practice of his profession, should not hold the | office of coroner in New Zealand. Mr Levestam moved, as an amendment, that the office of coroner be abolished altogether. Mr Tole, on behalf of the Government, supported the motion, and promised that steps would be taken to give effect to it. The House divided on the motion — Ayes, 33; noes, 6.
