WAIPAWA SPOUTS.

Sic, — I see by a local in your paper this morning that a grumbler in the disguise «>f " Highland Fling " suggests that the Waipawa Athletic Club should hold its sports at Kaikora. because a better running ground can be obtained there. In reply I beg to Btate that we have here a running track which cannot be equalled in the county. "Highland Fling" also objects to the sinallness of the prizes, especially that for the bag-pipeß. ISTow the club is actually giving over £60 in prizes altogether, and then we have to pay Dinnie £25 to appear, and Bundry expenses which, will bring the total of our expenditure to about £115. To meet this the committee have deemed it best to be judicious, but it is a hard job to please everyone, and we will have grumblers no matter what we do. We certainly gave over £100 in prizes on Boxing Day, but " Higbland Fling" must remember that the 6th of March is not a public holiday, which will make a great difference in the attendance. I am glad you pointed out that oura is not a Caledonian gathering, and it would be a pity to exclude the bicycle race, as it creates a great interest in this district. — I am, &c> W. Stephens, Hon. Sec. Waipawa Athletic Club. February 12, 1884.
