Court to-day three Maoris — two men and a woman — were committed for trial at the Supreme Court for burning down a whare at MHrimotu on the Ist of May last. A dispute arose between two tribes as to the title- of a piece of land about to go through the Native JLanda Court and the defendants burnt the whare to eject the occupants, a Maori woman and her European husband, whom they regarded as intruders. Bail was allowed, and Topia became the surety. Wellington, Monday. The Hons. Messrs Bryce and Rolleston left by the Hinemoa this evening for Auckland via Kawhia. Their visit is in connection with the thermal springs at Botorua. On Wednesday last Donald Smith, formerly a farmer at Opaki, but recently residing at Gisborne, was about to remove again his household goods to Masterton, and had left home to purchase some biscuits prior to starting, but since then ho has not returned, and nothing authentic can be ascertained of his whereabouts. His friends have been searching, thinking he might have met with an accident. He was observed to cross a paddock opposite his house instead of taking the road to the store, but nothing was thought of it at the time, until his coutinued absence gave cause for alarm. The elections for Harbor Board representatives took place to-day. For the Hutfc County Council and the Chamber of Commerce; respectively, Messrs Lancaster and Nathan were re-appointed ; for the representation of the shipping interest Captain Rose and Mr T. K. M'Donald were nominated, and the former gentleman was re-elected by a majority of five to one ; for the city representation there were five candidates, Messrs J. H. Heaton and John Duthie being elected. The other candidates were Messrs Gallan, R. Gardner, and W. M'Keever. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of W. C. M'Dermott, a clerk in the Government Insurance Department. He is charged with embezzling £40 by falsifying the books. It is believed that M'Dermott has left Wellington. John Margetts, who was arrested last week on a charge of obtaining money by false pretences at Auckland and discharged, waa re-arrested to-day on the same charge and remanded. Christohuboh, Monday. At a meeting of shareholders in the South Pacific Petroleum Company held to-night it was decided to communicate with Dv Fleming, chairman of the Sydney board of directors, urging the advisability of removing the directorate to New Zealand. It was also agreed to protest against expending money in putting down a second bore.
