£PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION, j Auckland, Wednesday. A fire broke out at 2 o'clock this morning in the centre of a block of five wooden shops in Wyndham- street. The conflagration originated in a shop and tenement occupied by. Mr Jacobs, bootmaker. Jacobs, his wife, and two children, who slept in the upper atory, narrowly e.caped. Mrs Jacobs was wakened by the bedroom becoming full of smoke, and at the same time she noticed flames issuing from the shop window below. A neighbor, attracted by her screams, procured a ladder and rescued one of the children by the window. Mrs Jacobs, in her excitement, got out at the other window and fell to the ground, but escaped unhurt. Jacobs and the other child escaped by clambering into the window of an adjoining shop. The fire brigade succeeding in confining the ravages of the fire to Jacobs' shop, though Hare's stationery, Buckston's second-hand, and Cavanagh's grocery -hops and stocks were much injured. Jacobs' stock waa insured for £100 in the Standard office, Hare's for £200 in the Norwioh Union office, . Cavanagh's for £150 in the South British office, and Buckston's for £50 in the Union office. The Supreme Court was occupied all to-day hearing a chargo against Thomas M'Lelland, a local bootmaker, of receiving a quantity of boot-uppers from two youths, knowing them to have been stolen. For somo time past the counties of Geraldine and Ashburton have been at loggerheads over the payment for repairs to the Rangitata bridge, costing over £6000. The work was carried out by the Ashburton County in a style thafc was objected to by the Geraldine County, and the latter refused for a considerable time to pay their half of the cost. The Ashburton County lately resolved to take legal proceedings agaiust the Geraldine County, but afc a meeting of the latter Council to-day two engineers reported that the bridge was all that could be desired, and the Council decided to pay up their shares without loss of time, £1500 being offered on account. Dunedin, Wednesday. The witnesses in the manslaughter case against the Roys turned up to-day, and ifc was proceeded with. The defence was that the lads fired for amusement, and thafc they kuew nothing of tho train, which happened to pass at the time. The jury were out for two hours, and then returned into Court with a verdict of guilty against both prisoners, with a strong recommendation to mercy on account of their previous good character. They did not think that the firearms were discharged with any intention to injure anyone. His Honor agreed with the jury, and said he would give the fullest effect to their recommendation which he could do consistently with his duty to the public. As far as Alexander, the younger, was concerned, he thought thafc the ends of justice would be met by his father entering into recognisances for his future behaviour, and no sentence would be passed. The elder prisoner, John Eoy, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment without hard labor. The Amateur Athlotic Club has now 255 members. A large dwelling-house at Kaitangata, the property of Mrs Milne, was burned down this morning with almost the whole of the contents. It is understood thafc there is a policy in the Norwich Union for £500, but the loss will considerably exceed this sum. It is expected that shortly after Edwards and Scott begin their 24 hours' walking match on Friday night, the Rev. Mr Byng (who will be present) will say a few words appropriate to the occasion, referring to moral and physical training. A deputation waited on the Hon. Mr Dick to-day to ask that the Industrial School children might be allowed out on parole to go to church, not in a body, but mixing with the various congregations indiscriminately. The Hon. Mr Dick promised to consult the master of the school on the matter.
