Our Waipawa coiTespondent's letter will be found on the fourth page. Ihe Hawke's Bay Synod will meet in Napier on the 24th September. At the meeting last night of the Wellington Racing Club Mr J. O. Evett was appointed handicapper for the spring and summer meetings of that club. The share list of the New Zealand Land Mortgage Company will close next Monday. Applications for shares may be made at the office of the New Zealand Insurance Company or at the Bank of New Zealand. We undei-stand that the Trinity Church congregation have decided to have a Christmaa tree towards the close of the year, in order to liquidate the circuit debt. The late fancy fair practically relieved the liabilities of the trustees, and it is to be hoped that a like success will attend the present effort. Bainer's panorama of the Russo-Turkish War drew another good house at the Theatre Royal last evening. Miss GHendinning was the recipient of the tea and coffee service, and Mr James Wilkins, White-road, received a very handsome album. This afternoon there will be a matinee at 2.30 for schools and families, every child receiving a present. In the evening the panorama of the American War will be exhibited, and it being the last of Mr Bainer's entertainments in Napier, an extra number of valuable gifts will be distributed, including some of domestic use. On Thursday night the store attached to the Te Aute Hotel was, with its contents, entirely destroyed by fire. Mr Limbrick closed the hotel shortly after ten o'clock, and then saw the store, which appeared to be all right. A few minutes afterwards a passing horseman saw the place in flames, and raised the alarm, but even then it was too late to save anything. The origin of the fire is a mystery. No one had been in the place for nearly three hours, and then only a back room was entered ; and a man who slept in the store had not retired for the night. The building was owned by Mr H. Williams, and was uninsured ; the stock belonged to Mr Limbrick, and was insured for £275 in the Standard office. Mr Limbrick estimates his loss, beyond the insurance, at £125,. and Mr Williams' loss will be about the same. The Rifle Volunteers paraded in the shed last evening for company drill. There was a good muster, very few men being unaccounted for,, the new system of printed leave and the active enforcement of the regulations evidently telling favorably on the attendance. Lieut. King was the officer in charge, After inspection the company marched to Clive-sqnare, where a smart skirmishing drill took place, the men acquitting themselves most creditably. This is the last parade but one which will take place in the shed on Mr Tiffen's ground, as it has to be removed immediately, after the next parade. The corps are under a great obligation to Mr Tiffen for having lor so long a period kindly allowed the use of the ground and adjuncts. '..We believe an effort is being made by* the commanding officers of the companies to secure anew drill-shed and permanent quarters. The Palmerston "North Timeshaa it that Mr R. J SeHdon, : M.H.R., has taken the Palmerstem Olub Hotel, possession to be given on the let October.
