"SOUKAR" AND THE JOCKEY CLUB SECRETARY.

Sic. — " Soukar," the . sporting^correspondent of the Wanganui Chronicle; has the following in the issue of that journal for the 16th instant : — " The circumstances in connection with the miscarriage of the nomination of the horse Mount for the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase are anything but creditable to the officials of that club. It has been ascertained that Mr Endorby's letter was . registered in Wanganui on the morning of the sth of June, and notice of its arrival waa delivered into the private letter-box of the secretary of the Havrke's Bay Jockey Olub, on the evening of the 6th, which, was the date of nominations. The letter was then left for five days unclaimed, and when at last Mr Esderby ■wired requesting to know the weight allotted bis horse, he received a reply from the secretary informing him that poet marks wefe inadmissible. Perhaps the secretary will give an explanation as to why be did not clear bin letter-box on the evening of the day upon which the nominations closed, and at the same time inform the racing public why he does not publisb tbe fact that the club decline to receive letters bearing tbe poßt mark of the date of nominations.

The letter containing Mount's nomination was not despatched from Wanganui until the 7th inst., and was received here on the 8th — nominations having closed on the 6th. To substantiate this I would ask you to -publish tho following telegram and letter : —

Telegram from postmaster at Wanganui to P,M., Napier. . • In mail No. 68, despatched to your office on the seventh, were two registered letters — one to P. D. Luckie, secretary Jockey Club. Said not to have been delrrerod him. — J. M'Bwh, Chief Postmaster, Wanganui. Memorandum from the Chief Postmaster, Napier, to F. D. Luckie, Napie,r. , Jii roforence to your inquiry about registered letter from Wanganui I beg. to inform you that the letter in question was forwarded from Wangauui on the 7th inst. and was received here on the evening of the Bth. — J. Gbubb, Chief Postmaster. „ • You will see from the foregoing that the statements of " Soukar." ; are, as usual, devoid of truth. — I am, &0., ■ F. D. Luckih, Sec. H.B.J.C.
