«. [fbom oub, special coerespondent.J ' [by telegraph.] Wellington, Wednesday. The lobbies were unusually quiet to-day in consequence of its being a general holiday. Mr Joyce's amendment on the address in rbply last nighfc was equivalent to a motion of want of confidence, but the Opposition resented ifc, and when the question was put they left the House almost in a' body. It is understood thafc the debate on the address will be practically resumed on Thursday, when the motion fur the appointment of a committee to wut on his Excellency to thank him for his speech will be put. Mr Holmes, a Christchurch lawyer, while speaking last night, addressed the House several times as -'Gentlemen." His speech, though intended to be very damaging to Ministers, was more in the shape of an address to a jury than anything else. He is generally regarded as one of the " big guns" of the Opposition. The financial statement will be brought down very shortly. It is expected that the .Treasurer wili have an unusually satisfactory- budget to submit to the House. ...
