THE ENGLISH CRICKETERS AT AUCKLAND.

[by telegraph.]

Auckland, Friday. The second day of the match between the All England Eleven and an Auckland Twenty-two was better attended than the first day, there being at least 3000 persons present. A strong southerly breeze prevailed all day, making bowling at the nor~ them wickot very heavy. The Englishmen went in a little before one o'clock, Ulyett and Barlow being at the wicketa, and Lynch and Lackham bowline:. Lynch opened with a ball from the hospital end, which. Ulyett played. A maiden rebulted. Lankham then started from the Newmarkot end, and another maiden enßued. Ulyett put Lynch away, but Cox well fielded the ball and only one was got. Barlow got the same bowler to leg for a single, and in the next over put Lankham in the slips for a Bingle. Then Lankham sent down a ball which made Barlow retire. Selby filled the gap. Ulyett hit Lynch well to off for 4, and shortly afterwards got Lankham to leg for 4. After some good play between Ulyett and Selby, during which King, the wicketkeeper, missed taking Ulyetfc, the latter was tempted by a ball from Lynch, and was neatly caught by Robinson. Bates came in and commenced operations, he and Selby making matters lively till 40 was up. Runs then came in more slowly, both players batting carefully owing to the Tweuty-two fielding well. Several maiden* ensued, and

shortly afterwards Lankham bowled Bates, whose innings though brief was a fine specimen of cricket. Shrewsbury came next. 2 to Selby off Lynch, and three successive maidens for Lankham. Selby drove Lynch for a single, and a grand square leg hit by Shrewsbury for 4 oft Lynch brought 50 up. Lankham. had his fourth maiden in succession, and an adjournment was made for lunch. After lunch Robinson took Lynch's place, and bowled against the wind. Selby got a leg hit from Robinson for 2, and then Shrewsbury broke the long succession of maidena from Lankham by slipping him for a single. Selby drove him for 2, and 60 appeared. Selby not feeling wtiil retired, and Midwinter took his place. Shrewsbury put Robinson away for one, aud Midwinter cut him for '■£, and drove him for one. Lankliam next was played by Midwinter. Shrewsbury got one of Robinson's, and the next ball Midwinter hit hard to the off and wa3 nicely caught by Bwckland. Soottou filled tho vacancy, and played the rest of the over. Shrewsbury hit Lankham woll to leg and 4 resulted. Shrewsbury again hit to square leg for one, and 70 was telegraphed. Shrewsbury smote Robinson lo leg for 2, and singles came Blowly, both bowlers doing well. Scotton slipped Lankham for 3, and then Shrewsbury cut him for one. Some good play succeeded after 80 was up. After a time, no impression being made on the wickets, every bowler in the Auckland team was tried, bufc to no effect — Arm-il, Buckland, Farrar, Cox, Isaac, Lynch, and Lankham again were put on during part of the time, Shrewsbury and Scotton having seemingly made up their minds to remain in all the afternoon. Half their score was composed of doubles, and after beiugf three hours at the wickets time was called, Shrewsbury 70 and Scotton 34, both not out. Only 4 wickets were down fur 16G runs. The fielding of the Auckland team waß only fairly good towards the end of the play. The following is the score : —
