There is now on view at Mr M. It. Miller's office a case,- en route for the Christchurch International Exhibition, containing samples of dressed flax (the Irish variety, not tke phormium tenax), and wheat grown by Mr John Gemniell at Messrs Boyse, Stead and Co'.'s Kiwi station, Wairoa. These exhibits speak' well for the character of the Wairoa lands, and should be the means of directing attention to the cultivation of European flax in that district. The specimens have been dressed by Mr John Davis, of Wairoa, and have been highly commended by all who have inspected them. A general meeting of the Hawke's Bay Racing Club was held last night, to consider what action should be taken with respect to certain charges brought by Murtagh against two members of the club. The principals desired to have the meeting „ fully reported, and at their request a reporter attended from our office ; but, after discussion, the meeting decided that it was inadvisable to publish tho proceedings, as certain legal actions in reference to the matters brought forward are pending. We quite concur in this decision — a court of law is the proper place to vindicate characters, iE they have been aspersed. We are informed that the result as to Mr Murtagh's disqualification was that the action of the stewards and committee was endorsed by a unanimous vote. It was also resolved that the names of Messrs Barrows and Leonard be erased as stewards, committeemen, and members of the club. Fire new members were elected— Messrs F. Sutton, M.H.R., Cottrell, Kitto, Hughes, and another, whose name we were not able to ascertain.

The Mastodon Minstrels vrere favored with another crowded house last evening. The swccess they have had so far has not been equalled by any company for some time past. Another complete change was made in the programme last evening, and it was decidedly an improvement upon the two previous performances. The chief attraction was the burlesque on " Pinafore." It kept the audience in a high state of merriment. The music was the same as in the original, but the words of the songs, &c, were parodied in a quaint and very amusing manner. The get-up of the company and the stage business were also very mirth provoking. Altogether it was one of the best, if not the very best, afterpieces that the company have played since their arrival. The repetition of the burlesaue this evening will no doubt prove a great attraction. The laughable farce, " Black Justice," proroked rounds of laughter. The singing and dancing were all enjoyable. The umbrella song and dance gave Messrs Morton and Young another opportunity of displaying their wonderful activity with their legs. The last portion of the programme will be repeated this evening, bvt a change will be made in the first portion. Mention must again be made of the orchestra, the excellent music provided being not by any means the least feature of the entertainment.
