Sir George Grey arrived to-day from BLawau on the Otaeo run business. It is vareousdy stated that he will interview tho Premier on the subject, or consult the Auckland members, or call a public meeting.

Chmstchtjbch, Thursday. Two attempts have been made during - the pas'" fortnight to set fire to a house in Gloucester-street, each attempt being ? discovered just in time. The average of the crops in the Ashburton district is estimated to range according to locality from 15 to 30 bushels per acre for wheat, 12 to 35 for oats, and 12 to 35 for barley. A telegram was received this niornmg from Melbourne by Mr Twopeny stating that a number of paintings were expected to arrive there from England for the art.gallery in the Christchurch Exhibition,, and that Mr Fletcher, who occupied the post of superintendent of the British' art gallery at the Melbourne Exhibition, will hold a similar position in the Christchurch Exhibition . The promoters , while v willing to receive entries up to March,' cannot guarantee full space to those perr sons applying after February 20. In allotting the positions of the various exhibitors preference will be given to those whose applications were earliest made. The contractor for the erection of the building is making very fair progress with his work, and it is expected that the greater portion of the frame work will be up thip week. The formation of the carriage drives has been completed, and metalling is being actively proceeded with. The EducationJjßoard have voted £20 for a bay in the Exhibition to be devoted to work done by the children attending the public schools— needle work, cabinet work, models, &c.

News is to hand of a man named Finn being burned to death at Mr John Perry's station, Upper Taureru, while burning scrub. The body was found this morning in a gully, the scrub being burned all round him. He was last seen alive about 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon.

Eobert Finlay, of the late firm of Lambeth and Finlay, builders, attempted to commit suicide to-day by hanging. He had a three- inch rope round his neck specially bought for the purpose. He had made his will and completed all preparations. His wife found him making the attempt, and it was frustrated. He has been drinking heavily for the past two years. A house at Waikouaite was bprned down on Tuesday night under suspicious circumstances. It was the property of Mr Strode, who, when he left, sold it to Constable Townsend, stationed at Waikouaite. The conveyance, however, was not concluded. As nobody was living on the premises it is thought to be a case of arson out of revenge on the constable. There was in the place furniture which had been sold to various buyers by Mr Strode, but none of it was insured. _ The premises were insured in the National offica for £1000.

The inquest at Queenstown on the fire at Waldmaun's was resumed to-day and further adjourned. The only fresh, evidence of any value tendered was that the accused securely fastened his private house ou the terrace and conveyed to it a basket containing tar ; that he visited it several times with full baskets, and came away with them empty. It is supposed that an accomplice •will yet give evidence.
