Information has been received from fc Awanui of a quarrel respecting the survey s of a block of native land at Waiapu. The 3 land is known as the Maraehara block, ; and was being surveyed for the Governv hient by Mr llaig. The land is owned by two natives — Wiremu Keiha and Mokenn. s Ou Friday, the 2nd instant, Keiha sent i three natives out with the survey party i for the purpose of going on with the work, ' thenatives taking arms with them. On arriving on the ground they found a native there named Anaru Whakareia and 3 also a lot of women, who had been sent J by M'okcna for the purpose of stopping - the survey. A nativo named Hakaraea, 3 who was in charge or Keiha' s party, asked Anaru what he wanted. Anaru Said that he kad been sent by Mokcna 1 to stop the survey, as Mokcna would not - allow it to go on without his people's i sanction, the land being theirs. Hakaraea told Anaru that if he came as a visitor he was welcome, but if he was there to interfere with the survey he ' would answer him with liis gun. Anaru fc then went away, threatening to return 5 On the following Monday with an armed I; party and drive Hakaraea's people off. Mokena had sent the women with Anaru so that there should be no violence, as he wanted the matter settled amicably. - Major llopata has written to Mr llaig ; that he had better stop the survey at s present, which he has done, and intends j going to Gisborne to get instructions how . to act. The police avoided interfering in the matter, keeping themselves, however, J informed of the movements of the natives, i in case of any serious breach of the peace ; being attempted, but it is expected that the affair will end as lumnlessly as did a similar one at Waiapu about a year ago. The illuminated address prepared by Mr Percival Bear for presentation to the Rev. D'Arcy Irvine is one of the hand- , somost things of the kind we have ever seen, and the high praise bestowed upon t it by the Mayor was fully justified. The work is the more creditable to Mr Bear considering the exceedingly short timo he was allowed. The address will be on L " view at Messrs Colledge and Craig's F until 11 o'clock this morning, Tvhen it 3 must be removed, as Mr Irvine and his family embark on board the Silver Cloud ' at 11.30. : The work of widening the promenade in front of the sea beach has been comf menccd. Mr Bull's saw -mills at Kopua had a narrow escape from being totally consumed by iire early yesterday morning. 1 Mr Jones, the coach proprietor, while ; tending his horses, noticed smoke issuing from the mills, and immediately gave an alarm. A contemporary, with a love for figures and some spare hours at command, has made the following curious calculation. Assuming that the debt of New Zealand is no\v £22,000,000, if taken in gold Sovereigns and laid out on their edges, one before the other, the chain would extend for a distanco of 2,992 miles. 2 furlongs, C chains, 4 poles, 8 yards, and 2 inches. Or if taken in sovereigns and laid one on top of the other, it would form a circular pyramid of the height of 20C miles, 5 furlongs, 7 chains, 2 polos, 3 yards, and 4 inches.
