The Union Company's s.s. Hawea is expected from Northern ports at ilayhreak this morning. She leaves for the Sontk at 11 a.m. The S.s. Clyde, Captain K. Baxtor, returned from Wairoa at a late hour on Tuesday. She brought the Port: Aliuriri crickctors, a few passengers, and 20 bales of wool consigned to Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co. The s.s. Southern Cross, Captain Helauder, left Auckland for this port via Poverty Bay at a late hour on Tnesday, and may therefore be expected here to-morrow morning. She has about 70 tons of cargo, principally railway material, which she will discharge at the breastwork, and then leave for Wellington and Lyttelton. Tho s.s. Mohaka, which left this port on Thursday niyrht last for Poiuuguluvu, returned yesterday afternoon. She reports that in trying to take tho .. Porammhau bar on Friday morning she grounded, through the shallowness of the water, and there remaiiifxl till about noon on Saturday, when she proceeded up the rivor and loaded a full cargo of wool. • The bar was not considered safe to cross till yesterday, when, after bumping several times, she was got over. Among other things which were carried away when on the bar was the steam pipe, through which.the engineer was severely scalded. Some little amusement was caused on the Spit by five sailors of the ship May Queen taking one of that vessel's boats and landing on the Petane beaoh, just as the captain was boarding his vessel in the Bj, Sir Donald, with the intention of immediately setting sail for the Bluif. The sailors after landing • exercised their running powers in the direction of the ferry, but when our report left the Spit they seemed to have realised their position, and were heading in the Petaue direction. Constable Harvey, we are informed, has set out in chase of them. It is reported that four of them are the same men who have lately been visiting Mr Miller's establishment for desertion, and the other the person who visited the E.M. Court lately to ascertain about his sanity or otherwise.
