WELLINGTON GOSSIP.

.. , y V [B^TELEGRAPfc];-/ /•'■-. Cy (FROM OUR OWN-i CORRESPONDENT.)*,, : ' Wellington, Wednesday. -V < ■ Tho Property " Assessment Bill is to come on for discussion to-morrow", but a yery< general impression prevails that there is not now, and probably there never was, any serious intention to pass it into law this session. As it is not required to meet the deficit this year, and could not possibly be brought into operation in time to do so, it is thought it can as well be left over till next year. In all probability if it goes into committee Ministers will propose to exempt all description of personal property and confine it to real and invested estate only. The Telegrams Enquiry Committee are expected to report to-morrow, and it is believed that they will report that a num- . ber of the telegrams laid on the table were of a private character, had been paid for, and were laid on the table in contravention of the Telegraph Act. In committee on the Bankruptcy Bill at an early hour this morning Mr Wakefield got a clause inserted giving the trustee in an estate power to void any act of the bankrupt done within six months prior to the bankruptcy. The bill is likely to be re-committed to have this expunged. In the Land Bill a clause giving companies a rebate equal to £20 for each adult introduced by them to the colony was struck out. This clause was especially framed in the interest of Mr Ve3ey Stewart, and would, it is said, have been worth £12,000 to him if it became law.
