TELEGRAPH STATION AT MAHIA.
Sir, — With your permission I would draw the attention of our worthy members to the greatly-needed want of a telegraph station at the Mahia. Time after time has this pressing want been pointed out, with no avail. It is not a station for which a guarantee should be forthcoming, as it is not merely to supply a local requirement that it 13 needed, but in the interests of the shipping community. To all mercantile men on the East Coast this station would prove a benefit. Insurance offices would look upon it as a boon, for Mahia is for many winds the only safe place of refuge on the coast. The expense, too, of the office would consist solely in its erection. The lino runs past Mahia/ so that its extension would be but trilling ; there is both an operator and a linesman stationed at Wairoa. Now, if instead of having the linesman there, the operators both at Mahia and Mohaka acted as linesmen as well (their work would easily allow them to do so) the same staff would suffice. Trusting the department will take the same view. — I am., &c , Progress.
