Some further testimony of the capabilities of Hawke's Bay as a grain producing district is furnished by the Sydney correspondent ef the Olago Witness, Writing on the grain exhibits in the exhibition, he says : — " The exhibits of grain, contributed by 157 exhibitors, among whom, Eoyse, Stead, and Co. hold the most important place, cannot be excelled." The sample referred to, we are informed, is from grain grown by Mr John Gemmell, manager of Messrs Royes, Stead, and Co, 's run, Tariroa, Wairoa.' The first anniversary of tho Loyal Hastings Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.TL, will be celebrated this evening by a dinner and .ball, which will be held at Goodwin's Hall. Those who have taken tickets for the trotting mare "Dollic " and the American buggy will note that the drawing has been postponed until Friday. The usual monthly meeting of the Hawke's Bay Permanent Building and Investment Society will be hold this evoning. The "privileges" of the Friendly Society's fete will be sold by Messrs lioutledge, Kennedy, and Co., on Wednesday. Messrs Langley and Newman announce an " art-union " lor the beginning of next year. The prizes number one hundred, and there are three hundred shares. All the articles can be seen at the establishment of the firm, the first prize being a very handsome drawing-room suite. Investors may thus see for themselves the values put upon the articles, and a visit will show that the prices are not excessive, as too often happens in similar lotteries. The eleven to represent tho Star Cricket Club, at the match between the Spit and Star clttbs on Monday weok, will be chosen from the following fifteen : — Messrs Kees, Edwards, Gilberd, Mayo, M'lntosh, Pay, Martin, J., Martin, H., Carwell, Hampton, Halbert, Hunt, Oelrich, Miller, D., Cotterill, A.
