WIIiICONSERVATISM AND LIBERALISM. Sir, — Several of the organs connected with the Conservative party in New Zealand have made the bold assertion that the present monetay depression is owing to the fact that the Liberal party is at present in the ascendancy in this colony, and that it was due to that fact that capitalists have boen prevented from coining amongst us. Now, Sir, those who have taken an interest both in the politics aud finances of New Zealand are aware that every seven or nine years, through circumstances over Avhich we have little or no control, a period of depression always exists. Sir E. W. Stafford, when requested to take office a few years ago, declined, because he foresaw- that it would be injurious to him to hold a high office under the Crown during the period when such depression existed. The Conservatiae party is in power in England, but no person conceives that it is because that party holds the reins of power that such dire distress exists at Home. The Conservative party in New South Wales and South Australia are in power, but, notwithstanding, we find workman in distress, and that this class of people are at present experiencing the same monetary depression as is beinej felt throughout the whole world. The United States of America were tho first to complain, .and the Press of that country is now the first to state that brighter times are coming, and so I presume England and her colonies will soon recover from tl c fever ; that brighter times will soon arrive, and that with JSlew Zealand's great natural resources, her people will rapidly recover from their present state, and we shall look back on the year 1879 as we now do on the year 1869, whether the Conservatives or Liberals are in office. Suffice it to say, that it will ever be advantageous to the people to see that their political rights are not infringed, and that the wealthy class of the population only have their fair share in the legislation of the colony. — lam, &c., A Liberal. MESSRS MERRITT AND CANTLE. Sir. — There is a line in Pope that would, I should imagine, have hit off Mr Cantle's feelings to aT, on receiving the fiver for finding and restoring Mr Merritt's purse. It runs : " Charms strike the right, but merit wins the soul." Yours, &c, Quiz. Napier, September 22, 1879. DEFERRED PAYMENT LAND. Sir, — Touching the question of purchasing land on the deferred payment system, Mr Ormond stated at the meeting on Monday evening that it was open for selection in part of the colony on such terms, but what he appears to have forgotten, or perhaps was not aware of, is the fact of having to pay 50 per cent, more than the upset price, which of itself is in most instances more than tho land is worth. Why does a Government professedly Liberal impose such heavy prices 1 This a very peculiar way of encouraging the settlement of the country. — lam, &c, Tax Payer. SPRING, 1879.
