NAPIER HARBOR BOARD.

Tuesday, September 9. % The board met at 2.30 p.m. Present : — The Chairman (Mr John Buchanan), Lieutenant-Colonel Lambert, Messrs Smith, Vautier, Lyndon, Miller, Williams, Kinross, Robjohns, Common, and Ormond." '* " V EXEMPTION CETIFICATES. '..' . The board decided tp grant certificates of exemption from pilotage to the captains of the Penguin, the Ringarooma, and the Ladybird. THE MOORINGS. A report was read from the Harbor Master stating that the diver had succeeded in recovering the mooring chain, the end of which had been made fast. Mr Kraef t suggested that the Sir Donald should be engaged to heave up the chain, and as it was much silted up that the services of the diver Bhould be engaged in clearing the chain as it was being hoisted. Mr Miller moved that the Harbor? Master's suggestion be adopted. Mr Williams seconded the motion. After some discussion the motion was.-:> negatived, Mr Kinross then moved that the Harbor Master be requested to get an estimate of : the probable .expense of clearing and lift- - ing the mooring cable. ; . The motion was seconded by Mr Miller '""^ and carried. CORRESPONDENCE. The following letters were read : — From the Collector of Customs, pointing -- out the necessity of the board providing weighing machines for use at the wharf. On the motion of Mr Kinross, seconded by Mr Common, it was decided that the weighing machines be provided. From the Marine Department, Wellington, stating that a white light for the port of Napier had been sent for. From the solicitor to the board, forwarding an account in the matter of Henderson v. the Napier Harbor Board, amounting to £710 Is 2d. It was decided tbat the account be considered with others at the next meeting of the board. ACCOUNTS. Several small accounts were passed for payment. WHARF ACCOMMODATION. Mr Kinross moved, pursuant to notice, " That a landing stage, 80 feet in length, at section B of the eastern pier, as specified in Mr Saunders' report, bo erected forthwith." Mr Williams seconded the motion pro forma. The Chairman pointed out that the board could not erect such a structure without the consent of the Governor-iu-Council. Mr Kinross, with the consent of tho board, amended his motion to read as •' follows : — " Subject to the approval of the | Marine Board, a landing stage 80ft, ia,

length, at section B of the eastern pier, as specified in Mr Saunder's report, be erected forthwith." There was a good deal of discussion on the .subject, and finally) W Mr Ormond moved, as an amendment, the plans and specifications for the proposed landing stage be furnished to the Government, with a request that they bo submitted to the Marine Engineer of- the colony, aud his opinion obtained for tho information of the board." Mr Miller seconded the amendment. Mr Kinross, by leave of the board, withdrew his motion in favor of the amendment, which was carried without dissent. The board then adjourned.
