At an inquest hold at Wellington yesterday on the body of John Mumford, who was found dead in bed, the jury returned a verdict that death resulted from heart diseaso.
At the 'Supreme Court, Wellington, in chambers, yesterday morning, Mr Gordon Allan, in behalf of Gleich, who was recently charged as a fraudulent debtor, had Decbective Browne summoned to. show cause why the money and jewellery found upon Gleich should not be restored. At the request of- counsel the application was adjourned for a Aveek, when it is believed that it will be renewed in open court. Lord Loftus yesterday accepted the Mayor's invitation, and drove round Auckland and its suburbs, and was subsequently entertained at a banquet at the Northern Club by the leading citizens. The Hinomoa arrived in the New Plymouth roadstead yesterday morning, and 63 prisoners were at onco inarched down to the beach under the escort of a strong guard, 38 of them beiug for Dunedin and 25 for Wellington. As the procession marched through the streets it was followed by a large number of spectators. The prisoners did not seem in the least disconcerted. On the beach a number of natives had congregated to see the prisoners off. Among the prisoners was one of Titokowaru's "braves" who, it is said, performed some horrible acts of mutilation of Europeans who fell during the last war. A domestic retreat for females out of employment, under the auspices of the Catholic clergy, is to be erected on the grounds attached to the convent at Christchurch. At a meeting on Sunday subscriptions amounting to £200 were promised. A well executed model of the Ly ttelton harbor, showing the completion of the intended works, has been prepared for tho Sydney Exhibition, at the order of the Harbor Board. Eight more "political ploughmen" were arrested at Huirangi, near New Plymouth, yesterday. They were ploughing Mr Bull's land. They were sentencod by tho Resident Magistrate to tsvo months' imprisonment in Dunedin gaol, and were ordered to find sureties to keep the peace for twelve months. At an inquest held yesterday at Timaru on Andrew McGorie, who was crushed by a boat, a verdict of accidental death was returned. A man named Lovine, while working at the pile driving machine on the Government landing at Timaru yesterday, was severely injured by the handle of- the windlass striking him on the head, and he now lies unconscious at the hospital. David Overs, lately a storekeeper at Sandiltown, Otago, has been anested on a charge of fraudulent bankruptcy. Thomas Murtagh, chemist and druggist, Kumara, committed suicide yesterday morning by taking strychine. The cause is unknown. A nugget 3^ ozs. in weight has been found by Tait's party in a claim at Dilmantown, Victoria. The dogs belonging to Maori squatters in Upper Waitaki are doing considerable mischief to sheep. Within the last month or two, the damage done by worrying is estimated at £500. Great complaints are made by the landowners. i A special meeting of the Christchurch
