HOW FARMERS ARE TAXED IN CANADA.

In an article entitled " One Day of a Farmer's Life in Canada," the Ontario Globe tells us how nearly everything tho farmer and his family eat or use is taxed under the new Protective tariff, and how much. The numbers given below are per- j centages when not stated otherwise : — Laiup and oil 30, sheet 20, blankets over 30, ticking - 35, window-glass 20, carpet 35, underclothing 27, soap 25, towel 25, shirty 30, outer-clothes 25, boots 25, door-hinges 30, oil 20, maize 7i cents a bushel, halter-strap 20 per cent. , currycomb 30, brush 25, harness 25, harness mountings 30, waggon 25, meal for porridge half cent, per lb. , copper kettle 30 per cent., stove 25, tablecloth 20, table 35, crockery 30, tea 33, teapot 20, hat 25, book 15, chair 35, knife and fork 20, sugar 35, corn-bags, 25, mower and reaper 25, wheel-barrow 25, blacksmiths' material 17y, dung-forks 30, tobacco 50, tub and pail 20, broom 25, clothes-line 20, box of raisins 20, cotton-batting 22, molasses 30, indiarubber goods 25, putty 25, medicines 50, slates lor children 25, corks 20, children's clothing 30 to 45, thread 20, sewingmachine 25, draining-tiles, 20, cement 22, wall paper 30, zinc 10, garden seeds 25, saltpetre 20, salt 10 cents per 1001 b., stationery 20 per cent, books 20 to 30, maps . 20, travelling trunk 25, clock 35, coffin 35, and tombstone 25. Poor man ! He is not even allowed free trade in burial. The tombstone may be regarded as a luxury ; but the Government might at least have left his coffin untaxed. As it is, he might be driven to go in for cremation if the tax on the furnace were not .so high." A picture not quite so highly colored might be sketched for the use of the farmers of Victoria.
