Monday, July 21 1 The Board met at 11 a.m. Present :— The Rev; D, Sidey, Messrs, Harding, Lee, and Tanner, In the absence of the chairman the" Rev. D. Sidey was voted to the chair. > CORRESPONDENCE. The following letters were read :— From the Port Ahnriri school committee, recommending Miss Mary Murray for appointment as sewing mistress, she 1 continuing as pupil teacher- in the school. The Secretary stated that Miss Murray being the pupil teacher she was required to tfeadh feewingi From the chairman of the Te Auta 1 school committee, pointing out that the circumstances of the district precluded such an attendance at the school as would entitle the teacher to an adequate salary, and reminding, the board that there was no residence /provided for the teacher. From the Hampden school committee, requesting the appointment of an assistant female teacher for the school, and that the sum of £15 be granted for fencing in the new play-ground. The board decided that the attendance at the school was not sufficient for an assistant mistress ; the grant of £15 was agreed to. From the Gisborne school committee, requesting the appointment of another pupil teacher to the sohool. — Grantedr From the Napier school committee, applying for some forms. The board decided to leave the matter in the hands of the Inspector to supply the forms should he deem them necessary. . ' From the Education Department, acknowledging receipt of the report onjthe matter of the Waipukurau school committee, and stating that by an unaccountable mistake the office file of papers on the subject was forwarded to the board. From the Havelock school committee, requesting the construction of two porches to the school building. • It decided that the matter be referred to the architect, and if his report be satisfactory that the expenditure be . authorised. - "^3f From the Education Departmental stating that a voucher for £622 2s 6d had been passed for payment for the Hawke's Bay district for the month of July. From the same, stating that it was not possible at the present time to say when any' vouchers could be passed for moneys payable out of the special vote to be yet passed for school buildings for the current financial year. From the Native Office, stating that £50 per annum would be paid to the board in aid of the master'.s salary at the Te Arai school, Gisborne district. The board instructed the inspector to make arrangements for the opening of the Te Arai school, and that the teachership be offered to Mr Lysnar at a salary of £150 for twelve months, besides bonus and house rent. From Mr Percival Bear, inviting the board's attention to' the expediency of appointing an itinerant teacher to make periodical visits to the board schools for the purpose of teaching singing and drawing. From the same, asking whether . the board would give a grant in aid of establishing winter evening classes for instruction in mathematics, classics, music, drawing, elocution, and English composition. -\ The board decided, with respect to M»^ Bear's first letter, that the application could not be entertained, as the teachers afc the district schools wero supposed to be competent to give lessons in drawing, and with regard to the second letter the board had no authority, under the Act to do what was suggested by Mr Bear. * SCHOOL REGISTERS. Mr Hill brought under the notice of the board tho desirability of taking action with respect to falsifying registers. . At one school that he had visited the number in .. attendance on the register' was 69, whileA he found that there were actually only 45 in attendance. In. another instance the register was not marked for the day. Mr Tanner moved, " That in any case where tho school register bo falsified the teacher be liable to be dismissed ; fhat the board would impress upon teachers the necessity of marking the school register at the time, and any omission thereof would be considered as falsifying the school register, and would be dealt with accordingly." The motion was seconded by Mr Harding and carried. EXAMINATION FOB SCHOLARSHIPS, &C. The Inspector stated that there were 31 applications for scholarships and 27 ft* pupil teachers, the examination for which would take place next Thursday. ACCOUNTS. A number of vouchers were passed for payment. The board then adjourned.
