HOW THE ZULUS EXTINGUISH A FIRE.
Every mail adds something to our know- j ledge of the Zulus. Last week the Uifenhage Times gave a suggestive atory of & missionary's experiences with that people. Having reached the King's kraal with a. view of converting hiro and his, people, hepreached on the beauties of heaven, and. j on the other hand threatened that, if they j lived a bad life, they would be cast into a. tremendous fire, so large that it would scorch up the whole Zulu nation. Chief : and people listened attentively, and then; i the missionary was invited to dine with, i the King. During the repast the preacher j was much affrighted by noticing the pre- j paration of an immense pile of wood ; and. \ his fear reached a climax when his sable- [ majesty turned and said, " What was that [ you said this morning about putting the. j great Zulu people in a great fire after they \ were dead ? Come this way and I will » show you what the Zulus are ; you don't j know them, I can see." He took him to \ the pile of wood and set fire to it all [ round. When it was fully in a blaze, and' gave out so much heat that no one could ! come near it, the King summoned the | two regiments who had listened to the I sermon, and ordered them to charge into. j. the burning pile and extinguish it. j Naked as they were, without shoes or anjr < covering at all, they rushed into theburning niass like madmen, raving* and! j yelling, and did notstop till hardlya vestige, of the fire remained. The King then said to the missionary, " You have seen that. That is what we will do with your helL The Zulu won't play with your fires, and you had better clear out of this country at once, or I will have a ' little fire ' mad© for you to put out." The missionaryneeded no second warning, but left the j kraal the same evening. It is no wonder ; that such people as this were not afraid of the ultimatum of Sir Bartle Frere ; ,; and the wholesale slaughter of Zulus by f Christian Englishmen can scarcely be ex- \ pected to lead to the conversion of Cete- ! wayo.
