I thank you for the confidence which you as my fellow-townsmen Lave reposed in me for many years past, a confidence ■which you showed by re-electing me to the Provincial Council and to the Borough Council. I believe that the pledges which I have at various times given to you have been faithfully kept, and that you cannot find fault .with any action of mine in the Council. 'When jjrou elected me to the Borough Council, you had the knowledge that my professional engagements would frequently prevent my attendance at its meetings. lam not aware that your interests have sunered by my occasional absence. Some persons have been kind enough to suggest, and even to state, that I never attended the Council meetings without a personal motive. I may be permitted to say that I have persistently refused to allow any narrow-minded person in my p'esence, to cast a slur upon the action of Corporation officers, and have required, that, if there were any supposed ground of complaint against an : officer, a substantive motion of want of confidence in him should be tabled, and a proper discussion and enquiry held. I have always opposed the action of obstinate ignorance when it attempted by unfair meanß to injure the reputation of Corporation officers. My personal motives have not led me to enrich myself through my position as a Councillor, and I have never even been blessed with a kerb-stone in front of my business premises. It is not my intention to offer myself for re-election. Yours faithfully, 972 G. ED. LEE.
