WASTE LANDS BOARD.

Thursday, April 10. The Board met at 11 a.m. Present — The Chief Commissioner (in the Chair), Lieut. - Colonel Lambert, Messrs Tiffen, Newton, and Buchanan. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Tho following letters were read and dealt with : — , j From the Under-Secretary for Crown Lands (memo. No. 192 of March 24) stating that under the special circumstances as stated in the chairman's letter of the 15th instant, the Government approves of the resolution of the board as to granting an extension of time for the payment of the second instalment of the purchase money for lands held by Scandinavian settlers at Norsewood and Danevirk. The Chairman stated that as soon as possible after receiving the decision of the Government he had sent notice to each of the settlers who were in arrears with their payments. From the same (memo. No. 193), calling attention to the Gazette No. 31, of March 31, in which certain lands recommended as school sites were notified as being temporarily reserved. From Mr H. J. Williams applying for permission to occupy sections Nos. 386 and 387, township of Clyde. The board decided that Mr Williams should be informed that the sections referred to will be offered for lease at the next public auction of Crown lands. From Mr R. Davies, applying for permission to occupy section No. 417, township of Clyde. It was considered undesirable to lease this section at present. From Mr George Harrison, stating the locality where he. desires to cut timber ana the public works fou which it is required. It was decided that Mr Harrison should be allowed to cut and remove timber during a period of six months from the present date, the timber to be cut from the land near the Ormondville Special Settlement, bounded towards the north-east by the Manawatu river, towards the southeast by section No. 101, Ormondville Special Settlement, and towards the south-west and west by the railway reserve ; payment to be made Monthly to the ranger on demand at the rate of 15s per tree of any description. From the resident engineer at Kopua, relative to a letter from the secretary of the Ormondville Small Farm Association making application for an extension of time for completing improvements. It was decided that the holdings not already passed should be inspected as soon as possible, the ranger to make- a special report in each case where the conditions are not complied with. From the Secretary to the Ormondville Small Farm Association respecting the road to be taken through section No. 83, Ormondville. It was decided that, if practicable, the line of road should be taken alongside the Government reserve instead of across tho land in occupation of Mr Wiles, and that the Chief Surveyor should be requested to have the land laid off accordingly. From the Under Secretary for Crown lands (telegram) notifying that Mr Cornelius Tuely is to be appointed ranger. From Mr E. Lyndon, applying, as trustee in the bankrupt estate of Henry Arrow, to transfer to George Walker the license to occupy 200 acres of land in the Makaretu reserve extension, selected under application No. 104. Application agreed to. ASSESSMENTS ON RUNS. The Chairman reported that the assessments due to the 31st of December, 1878, on certain runs had remained unsettled for a period of three months, the lands being held under licenses Nos. 77, 84, 188, 121, and 131. The term of license of the first two having expired on the 31st of December, it was decided that the occupiers should be called on to pay the arrears forthwith, and that in respect to the other three the consideration of the matter stand over until the next meeting of the board : also that the Commissioner of Crown Lands should endeavor to see Mr Hallett respecting the position of his lease of the Ranga-o-Tawhao block, and request him > to attend the next meeting of the board,
