OANTERBHRY. 1 ' ' " : Ohristohttech:; M^rqli'22.'-', The -match between the combined team -^including Lord Harris and .the -'other English visitors— and an eleven of Canterbury was played this . afternoon. » The day was splendid for cricket, and the match attracted a large number o£ spectators, between, 2000 and 3000. being- on. the ground during the play; ; ';■"... Lord Harris won the toss^Wd elected to go to the wickets. Hornby made a dashing innings, and showed ' decisively how the long hops Lee and Frith sent down should be treated. The other men succumbed rapidly to Ashby and Lee, and when the score stood at 108 Beard succeeded. in. clean bowling the Lancashire champion after he had made 1 66, including eighth's. , It was now expected ' that the combined team's innings would soon be over, but CbtteriU andLongden refused fdr some time to be separated. Five bowlers were tried . before' XJot- , terill was induced to go, and -then Fuller, who succeeded him, stuck, making single after single. These last three men put in 87. runs in 50 minutes, and played really well; the innings finally closing for 187. The fielding of , the Canterbury eleven was very, indifferent^ overthrows being frequent. V, It was not supposed that : the Canter- ! bury Eleven would have much troubleaa 1 drawing the. match, as' only two and a half houra were left to finish the game in, but they made such a feeble display against the second-rate bowling thatthey were all out by 20 minutes to 6; having then made only : 130.
