HAWKE'S BAY JOCKEY CLUB MEETING.

FIRST DAY.

President— Robert Farmer. Esq. Judge— Thomas Tanner, Esq. Stewards-^J. N. Williams, W. J. Birch, R. Farmer, W. U. Burke, Thomas Tanner, Jas. Lyon, W. Shrimpton, aii'l C. B. Winter, Esqrs. Starter— C. A. Fitzroy, Esq. Clerk of the Course— A. Danvers, Esq. Secretary— F.* D. Luckie, Esq. The annual race meeting of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club commenced yesterday at Hastings. There was a large attendance, notwithstanding the threatening aspect of the weather, which, however, held up until the principal race, the Napier Handicap, was being run, when it came down in earnest, and a regular stampede took place, only those whose duties compelled them, or those who could find a sheltered spot, remaining to witness the other events. The arrangements were excellent, and not a hitch occurred to mar the day's proceedings. A capital view of the course was obtained from the grand stand, which the public seemed fully to appreciate, and had the weather been a little more propitious the meeting would have been a complete success. The first race, the Maiden Plate, was fixed to take place at 1 o'clock, but was postponed for a quarter of an hour to allow the passengers by the 12.30 train from Napier to witness it. , There were six runners. Hailstorm and Loch' Lomond divided the premierohip in the betting, Kaokaoroa also finding plenty of friends. The race, however, was never in doubt, as although Loch Lomond made a semblance of a race, Hailstorm won easily at the finish, Kaokaoroa a fair third. The Railway Stakes came next, and when it was seen that Sinking Fund was amongst the starters, liberal offers against the other candidates met with no response, and in truth he had not much difficulty in placing the stakes to his owner's credit, Never Miss, who ran a good game horse, being second. Then came the principal event of the meeting, the Napier Handicap, which brought six runners to the post. Pinfire, in the absence of Sinking Fund, who was scratched immediately after his race for the Railway Plate, was made a hot favorite, odds of 3 to 1 being freely laid on him, but the pot nearly boiled. oyer, L^ly Elisabeth, against
