ADELAIDE, TJcbra&Ty 14. Flour, £12 10s to £13 ; wheat, 5s to 5s 2d. (BY SPECIAL WISE.) CHRISTCHURCH, Februory 14. Business here has been extremely languid in every branch of import trade during the past week ; even timber and cement have not . met with the support previously accorded to them. In teas and sugars there has been but little business, and transactions have been confined to small trade orders. Bottled ale has been in fair request at full rates ; Cameron and Saunders' and Porter's bottling have been placed at 12s. Bottled stout most difficult to quit, the supply being excessive j 200 cases " Boarhead " brand have changed hands • at 7s 9d and 11s 6d. In brandy there is nothing doing ; holders are firm in their rates, which are likely to harden in consequence of the commencement of an advance in the market at home ; quotations are 34s 6d for case and 10s for bulk Hennessy's, 22s 7d to 29s for case and 7s 3d to 9s for bulk of other brands. Other spirits show no improvement. Kero- . • sene and candles are heavy in stock, making it very difficult to effect sales even at losing rates. Cornsacks continue in steady demand, sales being made at 8s 3d to 8s 6d, according to weight and size of parcel; growers are being supplied at 8s 9d to 9s. Woolsacks have been without notice. Cement has not been in such active request as latterly ; rates, however, are steady at 18s to 18s 6d, G-al-vaniaed iron and fencing wire present no new feature ; holders seem disinclined to quote until the market shows some vitality. A line of 30 bales Kent hops has been placed at Is 4£d. In wheat the aspect of the market does not present much alteration; considerable quantities are being brought down by rail and put on board the export ships direct, but '. sellers at a rule are reluctant to take the prices offered, and in many cases purpose shipping on their own account ; the feeling prevails to such an extent amongst a certain class that it is generally believed this season will see a larger proportion of our wheat crop shipped home under these circumstances than has been the case for some years ; sales of good milling are being made at 3s 3d, other kinds at 3s ; old wheat has been sold in small lots at 3s 6d to 3s 3d. Oats have not altered in value, most of the dealers being rather bare ; the small lots put in the morket are readily taken at 3s 2d for good feed. For barley the inquiry for good malting continues unabated, and sales of extra fine samples have been made at over ss, but the average rate ruling is ,4s 9d to ss ; in addition to the home demand we can report a good outside inquiry. Potatoes are not yet in the market and the probable 'rates are uncertain. In flour a fair business can be noted, exceptionally good commanding the attention of the trade ; as a rule prices are well maintained at about previous quotations. Fat lambs have been in full supply without any active demand ; best lambs made 7s 9d, inferior command according to quality, and some were passed unsold. Fat cattle have been in excess of trade requirements, and have met with a dull sale at reduced prices ; best quality light summer weights made equal to about 26s to 28s, medium made 24s to 265 ; store cattle were in fair demand at a decrease on last week's prices. Store sheep met with a more ready sale than for weeks past. WELLINGTON, February 14. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report that at their Bale the attendance was good and the bidding spirited, which resulted in the whole catalogue being quitted with the exception of three lines They also quote the ruling rates as follows : — Inferior locks and pieces, 2d to 3d per lb ; greasy cross-bred fleece, 6d to B£d ; sheepskins, full wool, 5d per lb ; lambskins 9d each, and pelts 3d. In hides there was not a good lot offering, and buyers were disinclined to operate.
