The Government have decided to hold an inquiry into the circumstances attending tho drowning of the lad Taylor, who fell from the rigging of the ship Easter Hill, while on her way to Dunedin from London. CHRISTCHURCH, February 1. Mr Sauuders, the member for Cheviot, last night addressed a portion of his constituents at the school-house, Waikari. There were 30 electors present. Mr Saunders' speech was principally devoted to explaining why he did not support the Grey Ministry throughout the session. A unanimous vote of confidence was accorded to him. At five minutes to one this morning a fire was discovered on tho premises of Messrs Twentyman and Cousins, in a building at the rear of a ltirgo warehouse in Cashel-street. The premises wero found so secured and isolated as to leave little doubt that the fire was the work of an incendiary. At 9.45 to-night smoke was discovered issuing froun R. M. Kirk's milliner's shop, in George-«treet. Tho door was broken open, and firo was discovered under the counter. It was extinguished almost aa soon as the fire bell rang, and before any of the brigade reached the spot. The origii of the fire is unknown. It is stated that neither the premises nor the stock are anything like covered by insurance. Mr Conyers is pronounced by the doctors to be out of danger. WELLINGTON, January 7. A young man who has for a long time been collecting alms under the pretence j of being deaf and dumb, was arrested last night for sleeping in Cobb's stables. He was found possessed of a post-office saving's bank book showing he had under an assumed name banked from 10s to 14s per day for some months past, as the result of his begging. Several witnesses said they had heard him speak. Ho was remanded.
