(by special wire.) WELLINGTON, February 7. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency have received a telegram from London advising that the next wool sales commence on the* 18th insfc. Messrs Murray, Common arid Co. have received the following from their London agents by Suez mail: — "London, December 17, 1878. Tha fourth series of salea for the year, which began on the 19th November, closed to-day. The total quantity available for sale was 172,700 bales. The total quantity catalogued for sale was 166,606 bales. The total quantity held over is about 35,000 bales. Prices at the opening showed on the average a decline of 10 per cent, on the rates ruling in the latter part of the previous series, and for about ten days the market became weak. It was evident that the purchasing power of the home trade was very limited, and the market was mainly supported by Continental buyers, who have taken about 80,000 bales. Crossbred and low scoured showed the greatest decline, and in the case of the former there has been no recovery, while for the latter the competition during the last ten days has been decidedly stronger. The sales closed with a fairly, firm tone, and at prices corresponding as nearly as possible to those of the opening night, and here and there a trifle firmer. The quantity of fresh arrivals to date is 21,500 bales." ■
