HAWKES BAT STOCK AND STATION REPORT.

January 1879. Business in every description of stock lias continued exceedingly' languid since date of my- last; report. Buyers of store sheep are timid because of the unfavorable wool reports, and the depressed feeling arising from this affect property also, though the welcome rainfalls we have had at intervals during the past fourteen days giro good prospect of abundant feod, and will make holders of stock less willing than they previously were to make any great concession in price. Young Merino sheep are much in demand, but the high prices asked for all description of Merino cramp operations to a great extent. Crossbred ewes are very difficult to place, though young weddera of thi9 class maintain previous rates. Cattle, except fat, have in a slight degree suffered in price, and there are no good grounds to look for an immediate recovery in rates of stores. Shearing is all but over except in one or two back runs, and continued favorable reports of tho clip. Tho harvest, which is now progressing, is turning out much more favorable than was anticipated. Samples of wheat already to town are exceedingly good, and altogether the grain crop is fairly \ satisfactory, considering the unusually dry spring we had. Quotations for stock are — Cattle-^Fat, 25s to 27s 6d per lOOlbs j stores, mixed ages and sexes, average £4 to £4 10s ; steers, for individual ages rising 1, 2, 3, and 4 years, £2 15s, £4 10s, £6, and £7; female stock, same agaes, £2 5s to £6 ; dairy cows, £8 to £10. Sheep—Fat Merino wedders, 7s, enquiry very limited ; store do, 2 and 4 tooth, 6s to 6s 6d, fresh 8 tooth, 4s 6d to ss, aged unsaleable; ; crossbred weddera, fat 10s 6d to 12s 6d, store do, 2, 4, and 6 tooth, 7s 6d to 8s ; crossbred ewes, 2 and 4 tooth, 9s to 10s, 6 and 8 tooth, 6s 6d to 7s 6d, dull of sale ; Merino ewea, 2 and 4 tooth, 10s to 10s 6d, 6 and fresh 8 tooth, 6s 6d to 7s 6d, sound aged 4a to ss. Bams — Buyers are generally waiting our annual Ram Fair, to be held on 6th February. There will be a very considerable number i offered of both local, Auckland, and Canterbury bred Lincolns for sale as well as high class Merinos from the several breeders named in my special advertisement. Horse Stock— Draught medium for plough, though little demand at this season, may be quoted at £25 to £30, heavy draught £40 to £50, light do nominal ; good hacks, £20 to £25, lightjdo £10 to £15. Station Properties — Since my last the only transactions are the sale of Mr B. Doull's interest in Manipoiki and Opoiti, together 3920 acres freehold, with 1100 sheep and 80 cattle, to Mr David Doull, Gisborne, at rate of £8000 for the whole, and sale of part interest of Messrs Boyce, Stead and Co.'s Wairoa run to Mr John Gtemmell, as managing partner's share, at rate of £36,000 for tho whole. There are no other transactions to report as closed, though several now in negotiation are likely soon to be, from the increased desire of sellers to meet the viewa of buyers! here and still more generally so in Poverty Bay. M. B. Milleb, Stock and Station Agent, Auctioneer, &c. Napier, 16th January, 1879.
