TE AUTE.
(Mok 'OT^ PERIPATETIC CORRESPONDENT.) ''•'.' .V. '-.."'•'..... January 9th, 1879. |JJ am glad to learn that a subscription liitfhas been opened for the sufferers by the late fire, and I trust it will reach a Handsome amount. Mr Edwards, the greatest sufferer, is an old man, as well as dri^'of the oldest settlers in the place, tod' for? whom great sympathy is felt. ; The^ country all round is completely parched up, with scarcely any vegetation to be, seen, and all parties, are complaining 'still it is hot worse off than other places. However, it looks dreary enough, and ( must be disheartening to. the owners of property!; y* , r There was; torhave -been . a meeting of the Sfih'ool. Committee last evening, but in, consequence of the ; , non-attendance of spme ; of the , members it did not take place.;.,- ..-.<. i .v--" ; . • .. - i^Theirefreshment 'room at the railway station is a great acquisition to the travelling' community, - ; and reflects the highest credit upon Mr Allanach, the pror prie|ibr, ; who used great exertions ' to get the Government to grant it. The holidays .were brought to a xlpße by Mr Allanachgiviiig a grand spread oh 'the evening of the 7th instant.. Upwards of fifty guests sat down , to enjoy the hospitality of the host of the Te Aute Hotel, and there, cannot be a doubt that they did enjoy.; it»r':Theitables were literally crammed with the- choicest viands and all tbi aelicabies'dtf the Beason, and no expense was spared to make the gathering nappy and comfortable. After the dinner was over; vocal and instrumental music 'was^the order* of the evening, and some really capital songs were given, to the accompaniment of several local musicians, among whom rMr Allanach was the. most conspicuous for his , capital performance, on the concertina^ of which instrument he is a,perfe : ct master. The rain on Sunday last proved a great b6on^- as. water was getting very scarce indeed," but now; the various. creeks^ are pret^r-well supplied/ sind enables Mr LeCouter to,, carry, 'on ppißratiohsat his mUI, which, i through the "scarcity of the aqueoifß -element, was "almost at a standstill.. The flour produced at the mill is of .ai^ excellent, equality, and will bear favor'able*comparison ,with any produced in New Zealand. ' In. 'the. opinion of men ..Wjho tliofonghly dnderstknd the matter, if 'it is not supßrior, ! it is' thoroughly equal to Adelaide flour.
