THE MUNICIPAL ELECTONS.
The declaration of the result of the poll was made at noon yesterday by the returning officer in the presence of a considerable number of citizens. The event proved exactly as had been anticipated, though itwas certainly by a narrow shave that Mr Ashtcm won success. The numbers' declared by the returning officer were as follows i— Ashton, Edward . . . . SJ2I Cohen, Hyman Phineas . . 127 Cornford, r Henry Arthur .. 357 ■■ Ellis, George . . . . 146 Miller, Matthew Robertson 220 ! , Rearden, John Aloysius . . 32 j -Messrs Oornford and Ashton were deolared duly elected. , ' Mr Ashton said he had to thank the burgesses for the position they had placed him in, which was, all the more gratifying because the result was contrary to his expectations. He had not anticipated ' that out of so many candidates he would i have been placed in the position he had attained. He could assure the burgesses that, he would do his best to serve the ( interests of all parts of the borough alike. He jwas sure that the result must be gratifying to the man who represented the) "penny rag." He could now telegraph down South that one of the " small fry '■' had been elected. (Loud laughter . and! applause.) ..V'-W..- [ . \ Mr Oornford, who seemed disinclined to address the meeting, at length yielded to repeated calls, and mounted the box that had been provided for the occasion. He said he was sure that in such a blazing sunj they did not expect 'Him to inake r a speech, nor was it his intention* to deliver one] He thanked them heartily for the - unbounded confidence they had placed in so young a man. (Applause.), , , ( This terminated the proceedings.
