HAWKE'S BAY COUNTY COUNCIL.

Tuesday, October 16. j The Council met at noon, by adjournment. I Present— Messrs Brathwaite, Kinross, | Toit, and Williams j In the absence of the. Chairman Mr Williams was voted to the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. REPAIRS OF BRIDGES. A report was read from the county engineer, recommending that spch timber from the old Ngaruroro bridge as might be found suitable be reserved for use in the renewal of bridges between Havelock and Paki Paki. It was decided that Mr Bold should reserve what timber ho might deem necessary. THE TOLLGATES. Letters were read from Mr Laird and Mr Gleadow, the former asking to be relieved of Tareha's bridge gate, and the latter giving notice of termination of his contract, on account of the tollgates having become unremunerative since the resolution of the Council on the subject gave so much room for claiming exemptions. Mr Gleadow also wrote asking whether a single payment for one year would be sufficient to exempt all horses and vehicles of persons so compounding, and he gave as a reason for asking that persons claimed to be exempt on the ground that the horses they were riding had been hired from Mr Rymer. The whole correspondence was referred to the county solicitors for their opinion. OLIVE POUNDKEEPER. A letter was read from Mr George White, applying for the transfer to him of the appointment of poundbeeper previously held by Mr Scott. The secretary was directed to procure Mr Scott's resignation, and then the board would deal with the matter. SLAUGHTERHOUSES. A report was read from Mr Thomas Aldridge, Inspector of Slaughterhouses, stating that all the slaughterhouses in the district were being properly conducted. THE COUNTY EXPENDITURE. A letter was read from Mr Bennett stating that he would be unable to attend the meeting of the Council, and suggesting that a resolution be passed for diminishing the expenditure, as the roads would stand the summer weather without much expense. HASTINGS AND HAVELOOK ROAD. Mr Brathwaite moved, pursuant to notice, "That the Council take over the road between Havelock and Hastings in accordance with the petition of the ratepayers to that effect." The motion was seconded by Mr Kinross and carried. SAND DRIFT AT HAVELOCK. A report was read from the engineer, stating — in reference to the sand drift at Havelock — that if the Council decided against undertaking operations on private property, traffic might be kept) open by fascining or metalling over the surface of the sand, as the drift from time to time accumulated. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Brathwaite, seconded by Mr Kinross, that the engineer be instructed to keep the road open near the 10th mile post, in acaordance with his report. RETURNING OFFICERS. Mr Kinross moved, "That the following be appointed returning officers for the County of Hawke's Bay, viz. :— For Petane, J. A. Hamilton ; Meanee, J. C. Speedy; Heretaunga ; fy Someryille j I
