TAUPO.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) August 21st, 1878. Of late so few things of interest- have transpired in this district that "Your Own " finds himself in the same position as the correspondent of the New York Herald did in the time of the American civil war, when having nothing else to say, he wired, "All quiet on the Potomac." However, I have one or two items which may interest you, though native news in this district but little interests you outer barbarians. A large party of friendly natives left here yesterday for Tuhua, for the purpose of bringing in pigs, preserved pigeons, and other- native delicacies, for a great meeting of natives, which is to be held at Orunui about the middle of next month.. Whether the meeting has any political object I cannot as yet ascertain. The natives are still agitating for the removal of the school from here to Orunui,

It seems a great pity that the late Government should ever have placed it here, as there are no natives living within eight miles of this place. It is rumoured that Major Roberts will shortly leave this for Taurauga, to be succeeded by Major Scannell. "A sound of revelry was heard by night." A ball took place one night last week at Mr Noble's hotel, attended by the elite of the township, when dancing was kept up with great spirit till the Bmall hours. These pleasant reunions help to compensate us for the monotony of existence in this, our New Zealand Siberia. The weather, as might be expected this time of year, is anything but salubrious, balmy, or tropical.
