CORRESPONDENCE.

» The Editor does not hold himself responsible for opinions expressed by correspondents. THE FIRE BRIGADE AND THE CORPORATION. Sir, — The Committe of the Fire Brigade will feel obliged if you will publish the following correspondence respecting the squad practice with the high pressure water supply on the night of the 19 th ultimo. The brigade have asked for an enquiry into the matter, but the request has been entirely ignored by the Corporation. If such an enquiry were held it would be found that no blame attaches to the brigade in any way, and that what damage was done was not committed by any member of the brigade. You will see by Mr Peppercorne's letter, forwarded herewith, that the brigade did not use the high-pressure water supply without authority. — I am, &c, G. V. Kemsley, Superintendent Fire Brigade. Fire Brigade Station, Napier, March 14, 1878. The Municipal Engineer, Sir, — The Fire Brigade will hold a practice this (Thursday) evening at eight o'clock. If you can favor me by putting on the water from the reservoir, if only for a short time, and to one fire plug, I should feel greatly obliged. If, in your present state of your health, you would prefer to adjourn the trial for a few days, I shall have much pleasure in acceding to your wishes, And remain, Sir, Yours obediently, G. V. Kemsley, Superintendent. F. S. PErFERCORNE, Esq., Municipal Engineer, Napier. Mr G-. Kemsley, Sub-Superintendent Napier Fire Brigade — Sir, — I have to request particularly that, in the event of the brigade holding a hose practice to-night, or at any other time, you will not open any of the stop-valves that are closed, as the consequences might ie most serious. The water pressure from the reservoir is now in the pipes as far as the stop valve opposite the Bank of New Zealand, and that opposite Price's establishment. The fire-plug opposite Solder's is the only one that can at present be used for hose practice under high prcsszire ; also one in firewater* street and one in Shakespeare-road. Yours obediently, FiiEDic. S. Peppercohne, Municipal Engineer. Tuesday, 19th, 7 p.m. Mayor's Office, Napier, March 20th, 1878.
