HOKITIKA, February 12. David Cruickshank pleaded guilty in the R.M. Court to-day to having an illicit still in. his possession. He was fined £100, or six months' imprisonment. Several miles of beach are strewed with small fish near Okarito. The cause is unknown. Hundreds of tons of fish were thrown ashore.

TAURANGA, February 12. To-day the telephone was tried by Floyd, electrician, through a resistance equal to seven hundred miles of perfectly unsuitable wire, with entire success. The sound reached the receiving instruments distinctly, though a little fainter than when it only travelled through a few yards of wire.

WELLINGTON, February 12. A large number of Maoris have assembled at the Wairarapa to meet Sir George Grey, who has promised to address them on political matters between now and Thursday.

Campion, £99 15s ; Hayward, £95 ; Gilligan, £61 15a ; Heaton. £47 10s ; Redwood, £47 10s. All the other sums paid were under £20. It is expected that the branch railway to the racecourse will be completed before the next races.
