The cutter Rapid lightered the Falcon of a portion of her coals yesterday morning, and in the afternoon Pilot Kraeft went out in the steam launch Sir Donald for the purpose of fetching the Falcon to the breastwork, to which she was moored at 4 p.m. The schooner Albatross cleared, at the Customs yesterday in ballast for Whangapoua. The Union Steamship Company find that by using the Bay of Islands coal it will produce an annual saving to the company of £ 5184 — net a small item. The Bay coal can be purchased at the river mouth for 12s per ton, while that of Newcastle costs 335 ; but as a ton of the latter is reckoned equal to something like 25cwt., the actual saving on each ton will be 15s. The work of the company at present necessitates a supply of about 8000 tons per year. The usual visits of the steamers to the Bay will not in any way interfere with the time-table.
