EDUCATION MEETINGS.

MAKABETTT. The meeting of householders advertised to take place on the 28th January for the election of a committee under the new Education Act was held at the AshleyClint on school-house. The attendanda was not large, owing no, doubt to th©^ settlers being situated so far apart, and not caring to risk their necks after dark on such roads as we have in this district. However, there were more than enough to form a committee. Mr W. Thompson was voted to the i chair, and then the business of the meeting commenced. Ten householders were nominated, and after the ballot the successful candidates were — Messrs N. Loye, W. Thompson, G. Durham, J. Madden, N. Neilson, H. Anderson, and E. Tucker. The committee at once proceeded to elect a chairman. It was proposed by Mr G. Durham and seconded by Mr J. Madden that Mr Thomson be chairman for the present year.— Carried unanimously. The Chairman then drew the attention of the committee to clause 71, which empowered the committee to appoint one of its own members or some other qualified person to be its clerk and treasurer. None of the members being agreeable to fill the office, the Chairman asked the present teacher of the school, Mr 0. Morton, if he would accept it. He declined, giving as his reason that being a teacher he believed he was not eligible. Most of the members, however, took a different view of it, and asked if he would accept office pro tern, until the chairman communicated with the board. This he accepted. Several of the settlers living close to the school-house were greatly disappointed to find that they were not in this school district, after taking an active part in the erection of the school. The school, it may also be remarked, is not in the.^ Makaretu District, but in Waipukurau/ The chairman promised he would write t^ the board, and see if the boundaries'"^ could not be altered, so as to include those settlers on the outskirts of the Makaretu Beserve in this district. Before dispersing, the Chairman remarked on the non-attendance at school of a great many children living in the I bush. He admitted there was an e^ctese I under the old Act, in their not being 'feble I to pay the school fees, but under the present there was none, and he urged" the committee to do their utmost in persuading parents to send their children to school. He regretted that he could not send his children, living as he did five miles from the school, and to get that distance he must go round by Messrs Grant and A'Deane's homesteads, a distance of 22 miles, there being no connecting road between Ashley-Clinton and the southern portion of the Makaretu Reserve. ONGA OHOA. A meeting was held in the public room, Onga Onga, on Monday evening, at 6 o'clock, for the purpose of electing a school committee. Most of, the leading and many of the smaller settlers were present. Lieut. -Colonel Herrick occupied the chair. ' The Chairman expressed his pleasure to see so many present on this occasion, which showed the interest, not only the parents, but the bachelors also, took in establishing a school at Onga Onga. A school committee was then chosen by ballot, the following gentlemen being elected .-—Messrs J. L. Herrick, H. H. Bridge, G. P. Coles, J. Bain, J. Glenny, M. M'Lennan, J. M. Newman. The boundaries ©f the district were then discussed, when, after some, lengthy arguments by some of the gentlemen present, as to which should be the boundaries, it was agreed on the voices that this meeting adopt the boundaries proposed by the Education Board. A vote of thanks was proposed to Lieut. -Colonel Herrick, who in return thanked those present for their attendance, and the meeting closed. PORANGAHAU. f In accordance with the provisions of the Educational Act, a public meeting of householders in this district was held on the evening of January 28, in the schoolhouse, for the purpose of electing a committee of seven, out of whom two were to be chosen to represent the district as members of the Education Board.
